Toledo police are investigating an attempt overnight to pull an ATM out of the ground in the 500 block of Dorr Street near Collingwood Boulevard with a telehandler, the boom-armed lift used to move pallets on construction sites. 13abc reported it at 11:41 a.m. and its footage shows the machine parked beside a wrecked drive-up unit under a Fifth Third Bank sign, with the housing torn open on the pavement. Police had not said whether the thieves got any money, where the machine came from, or whether anyone was seen. Toledo police had posted nothing about it on their own site by Monday evening. The block has been hit before. Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union, at 500 Dorr St., counted four attacks on its ATMs through last February: one with a chain, one that went for the machine’s electronics, one at its Monroe Street branch with a skid steer, and one in February in which a truck tore the front off the Dorr Street unit while the alarm failed and police took two hours to arrive, its founder Suzette Cowell told 13abc then. In December 2024 a hot-wired forklift ripped a Fifth Third ATM out of Library Plaza on Dorr Street at Reynolds Corners, a month after a similar theft, and Lt. Paul Davis of Toledo police said both had happened near construction sites. Since then thieves have hit a Sun Federal Credit Union ATM on North Reynolds in October and a barber shop’s machine on Secor Road in June. Whether any arrest has followed any of them is not on the record this paper could find.

The monument follows a year of research by Gary L. Franks, a local author and historian, and was paid for by a GoFundMe campaign, the Perrysburg Rotary Community Foundation and the city.
Franks will speak at the unveiling, with Taylor Moyer, programs manager of the Black Swamp InterTribal Foundation, and Kim Mahaney Kennedy, whose mother, Joyce Mahaney, led the American Indian Inter-Tribal Association and conducted reburial ceremonies at the park in 1991 and 1995. The ceremony is open to the public.

Go out at 11:30 tonight and face due north. The Moon will neither help nor hurt: an 11 percent waning crescent that set before the sun did and does not come back until about three in the morning, so the sky is as dark as it gets here. The forecast is mostly clear, going partly cloudy later. Those are the conditions people wait all year for, and the one thing you may have been told to look for is the thing that will most likely not be there.
The Space Weather Prediction Center issued its three-day forecast at 8:30 Monday morning. It puts the planetary K index, the number for how hard the solar wind is shaking the Earth’s magnetic field on a scale that runs to nine, at about 4.3 tonight, 4.7 in the hours before dawn on Tuesday, and 5.0 before dawn on Wednesday. Five is a G1 storm, the smallest of the five NOAA names. Two clouds of solar plasma left the sun on Saturday and Sunday, and the forecasters’ own note says confidence in when they arrive, and how hard, is low.
What a G1 buys is written into the federal scale itself: aurora “commonly visible at high latitudes (northern Michigan and Maine).” The rung that reaches this far south is G3, two steps up, which the same table describes as having “been seen as low as Illinois and Oregon.” Nothing in this week’s forecast goes past G1. Northern Michigan is four hours up I-75; the light on our own northern horizon tonight is Detroit, 58 miles off, and it is not from the sun.
So look north anyway. Polaris sits 42 degrees above the horizon, a little under halfway from the ground to straight up, and it holds still while everything else turns around it. Directly overhead, 84 degrees up, is Deneb. Off to the east-northeast, Capella has just cleared the rooftops for the first time this season, 11 degrees up and climbing; by December it will be overhead at this hour. The clouds arrive after midnight. Until then the north is dark and open, which is all anyone watching can ask for.
