The basket was built to answer a question the government does not: what a week costs here, in this city, at these stores. Washington prices a national food plan and publishes it for the whole country. Mexico prices a basket every week and names the store. Toledo had neither. The 41 items are the ones a family buys in a week: bread and corn tortillas, rice and spaghetti, eggs, chicken breast and leg quarters, ground beef, pinto beans and lentils, milk and cheese, bananas and potatoes, coffee, toilet paper and trash bags. Store brand where one exists. The same list was read at the same chains in Ann Arbor and Detroit, and the answer to a question a reader asked this week is in the data: a Walmart is a Walmart on the shelf-stable aisle and a different store in the produce section. Every packaged Great Value item was the same price to the cent in Toledo, Saline and Dearborn. Milk was the exception at every chain. A gallon of 2 percent ran from $2.50 at the Toledo Walmart to $3.39 at the Kroger nearest Detroit, and no two Meijers sold it at the same price. A note on how the prices were read. Every cart was priced Monday, Sept. 7, at the chains’ own websites with the store set to a single named address and the order set to pickup or in-store, never delivery, which carries a markup. I threw out one full read of the Ann Arbor Aldi because the site had silently kept the Toledo store, and the tell was that all 41 prices matched. Sale prices are the price paid. Where a store did not carry an item, the median of the others stands in and the receipt marks it; Kroger sells no store-brand laundry detergent and Aldi sells no dry lentils. The city’s own water-rates page still shows the old $11.50 refuse fee, so the ordinance is the source. The city had not answered by press time whether the page will be corrected.Una nota sobre cómo se leyeron los precios.
