Maumee Bay’s Lake Erie beach has its first algae advisory since 2024La playa del lago Erie de Maumee Bay tiene su primer aviso por algas desde 2024

A recreational public health advisory for algal toxins has been posted at the Lake Erie beach of Maumee Bay State Park since Sept. 14. It is the first algae advisory at that beach since 2024, and it is the only one in force anywhere on Ohio’s Lake Erie shore. An advisory of this kind is a warning.

The federal bloom bulletin issued Sept. 18 puts the cyanobacteria bloom in the western basin at about 300 square miles. That is down from what the bulletin measured on Sept. 14 and up from the roughly 240 square miles in the bulletin of Sept. 11, the last federal figure this paper printed. The bloom runs from Stony Point, Mich., to the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in Ohio, and reaches West Sister Island, with patches as far out as East Sister Island.

The highest concentrations are in Maumee Bay and offshore as far north as Monroe, Mich., the bulletin says, and toxins have been detected above the recreational limit in western Lake Erie. Scum is where the toxin concentrates: the bulletin’s advice is to keep people and dogs out of it. Winds above 15 knots mix a bloom down through the water column, which is why a calm day is the one to watch.

Twelve advisories in Ohio, and one of them is algaeDoce avisos en Ohio, y uno es por algas

The state’s advisory record carried 12 beach advisories in force on Sept. 18. Six of them are on Lake Erie. Five of those six are for bacteria, at four Erie County beaches and one in Lorain County, and the sixth, Maumee Bay, is the algae one. The longest-running advisories in Ohio are not on the lake at all: four beaches at Grand Lake St. Marys, in Auglaize County, have been posted for algal toxins since May 20, which the state counts as 121 days.

The same record goes back to 2008, and it shows how uneven an algae season is at that one beach. In 2017 the Lake Erie beach at Maumee Bay was posted for algal toxins on 71 days. In 2024 it was 55. In 2025 the record shows none at all, and between 2009 and 2016 it shows none either. The grapes are coming off, and the lakeshore is two weeks behindLa uva empieza a entrar, y la orilla del lago va dos semanas por detrás

This week’s pick is grapes, because the picking has already started. Ohio State samples the fruit at its research vineyards every week through the season and publishes what it finds; the sampling of Sept. 14 is the newest. At the Wooster vineyard, ten of the thirteen varieties on the sheet already carry a harvest date — Einset, Jupiter and Vanessa on Aug. 21, Itasca on Aug. 31, Clarion and Frontenac blanc on Sept. 1, Marquette and Regent on Sept. 2, Crimson Pearl and Petite Pearl on Sept. 9. Three are still hanging: Cabernet franc, Chambourcin and Chardonnay.

The sheet measures three things. Soluble solids is the estimated sugar in the juice, as a percentage. Titratable acidity is the acid, in grams per liter. The sheet’s own index divides the first by the second and multiplies by ten, which gives one number for how far along the fruit is. Sugar climbs and acid falls as a grape ripens, so the index rises on both counts at once.

The second vineyard on the sheet is at Kingsville, in Ashtabula County, on the lake. Its heat this year matches Wooster’s to within two degree-days — 2,812 against 2,810, counted from Jan. 1 — and its fruit is not in the same place. Cabernet franc at Wooster read 18.3 percent sugar and 10.4 grams of acid on Sept. 14. The same variety at Kingsville read 17.7 and 13.5, about a third more acid. Only Regent has been picked there, on Sept. 9. The report puts the reason plainly in its own opening note: ripening on the Lake Erie shore runs one to two weeks behind.

The climb is the thing to watch, and it is steep. Kingsville’s Cabernet franc went from 13.5 percent sugar on Aug. 31 to 16.2 on Sept. 8 to 17.7 on Sept. 14 — better than a point a week, and it is not finished. That is the curve a grower is standing on when deciding which morning to pick, and it is the same curve behind the table at the market this month. Neither vineyard is a market, and neither is the typical case for the shore: these are research rows, picked when the research says to pick them.

The Lake Erie bloom is shrinking and thickening at the same time, and the scum is piling up off ToledoLa floración del lago Erie se encoge y se espesa a la vez, y la nata se acumula frente a Toledo

Western Lake Erie’s cyanobacteria bloom is covering less water than it did at its summer peak and concentrating what is left into mats.

Two measurements of the bloom’s size are on the record this week and they do not match. Stumpf’s figure has it down from a summer high of 480 square miles to 320. The federal bloom bulletin issued Friday puts it at about 240 square miles, a decrease since Sept. 7. Both are printed here because both were stated; neither is this paper’s estimate.

The bulletin places the bloom from Stony Point, Mich., down to the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in Ohio, with the heaviest concentrations in and just outside Maumee Bay. That is the water in front of Toledo.

The toxin the bloom produces, microcystin, has been climbing at individual sampling sites. Researchers found their first site above the recreational contact limit on Aug. 31. The highest reading of the year came Tuesday, at 6.83 micrograms per liter, which is below the 8.0 microgram limit set for recreational contact.

“But for the last several weeks, there’s been a good bit of scum out there,” said Reagan Errera, a research ecologist at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor.

Elevated levels have turned up in open water near the mouth of the Maumee River and near Toledo’s raw water intake three miles offshore. The city says none of it has reached the tap. Tori Lane, a spokesman for the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant, said finished tap water has shown no microcystin detection, and that the presence of the toxin in source water “does not mean that it is present in the finished drinking water.”Se han detectado niveles elevados en aguas abiertas cerca de la desembocadura del río Maumee y cerca de la toma de agua cruda de Toledo, a tres millas de la costa.

No drinking-water advisory is in effect. Lane said the plant has been built to handle blooms “significantly larger than the conditions we are currently experiencing.”No hay ningún aviso vigente sobre el agua potable.

Stumpf, writing to other researchers, put this year in its place in one line: “Highest biomass of the year, but in the range of the forecast.” The season’s early forecast, issued in late June, called for a moderate bloom.

What that means for a reader this weekend: the scum is thickest in and around Maumee Bay, contact with it is the exposure that matters, and the tap is not the issue the city is being asked about. The federal bulletin is issued twice a week and is published in full.

The Mennel Milling Company, the Fostoria miller that runs eleven grain elevators across three states, has sold its C&O grain elevator and rail transload facility at 798 Lincoln Way in Upper Sandusky to the Kalmbach family, the Upper Sandusky feed company’s owners. The sale was announced Aug. 28. Neither company disclosed a price.

“As market conditions in Wyandot County evolved, the C&O facility in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, no longer aligned with Mennel’s long-term operating model,” said D. Ford Mennel, the company’s president and chief executive. Paul Kalmbach Jr. said the buyers appreciated “the opportunity to work with Mennel, another exceptional family business.”

Upper Sandusky is in Wyandot County, outside this paper’s coverage area. The seller is not: Mennel is headquartered at 319 S. Thirteen Ohio crops are in their last monthTrece cultivos de Ohio están en su último mes

September is the turn in the Ohio harvest calendar, and this year the count runs one way. Forty-three of the fifty-two fruits and vegetables on the Ohio Farm Bureau’s availability chart can be had this month. Thirteen of them will not be there in October: peaches, blueberries, blackberries, cantaloupe, cucumbers, summer squash, eggplant, okra, broccoli, snap beans, lima beans and both cuts of dill.

Five start this month rather than end it: pumpkins, cauliflower, turnips, parsnips and, on the chart’s own reading, watermelon, which it gives a September-to-October window rather than a summer one. The practical version, for a Wednesday: the soft fruit and the vine crops are the ones with a deadline on them, and the roots and the brassicas are the ones that will still be at the market when the weather turns.

Walbridge cut a ribbon on nine acres of creek that had been engineered to slow downWalbridge cortó la cinta de nueve acres de arroyo diseñados para frenar el agua

Village officials, state officials and residents opened Dry Creek Preserve on Sept. 2. The new park holds a half-mile walking trail and 1,480 linear feet of Dry Creek with its floodplain, and it was paid for with U.S. EPA money from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. It qualified because it sits inside the Maumee Area of Concern, where habitat for aquatic populations is a priority.

The engineering is the point of it. Crews regraded the streambanks to rebuild the natural benches a creek spreads onto when it rises, which slows the water, drops sediment on the benches and lets plants take up nutrients before the water carries them downstream. Wetland and upland areas beside the creek hold surface runoff in low spots long enough for it to soak in. All of it drains, eventually, to Lake Erie.

Mayor Edward Kolanko put the volume in gallons. “That means that instead of a couple million gallons of water going in that direction, it kind of takes a break into this natural preserve area before it dissipates back into the creek and continues on to Lake Erie,” he said. “Less water pressure for Walbridge residents helps our systems work a little bit more efficiently.” The preserve is on the north side of Walbridge Road, about a quarter mile from East Broadway.

Look up at dusk this week and the sky over the Metroparks may empty into a chimneyMire al cielo al anochecer esta semana y el cielo sobre los Metroparks podría vaciarse dentro de una chimenea

The park district’s September notes point to the swallows and chimney swifts now gathering to feed on insects before they migrate, from late afternoon into near dark. Chimney swifts cannot perch on a branch: their legs are too short and their wings and tails too long, so they roost vertically, clinging to the rough inside walls of chimneys, church towers and other tall hollow structures. The goldenrods, asters, ironweeds and bonesets are in bloom, and the earliest tree color arrives as September turns into October.

A drier Tuesday and Wednesday, then rain through the holiday weekendMartes y miércoles más secos, y luego lluvia durante el fin de semana feriado

The week runs hot and humid. Today and tomorrow are the drier end of it, and rain works back into the eastern corn belt from Thursday through Sunday — a quarter-inch to an inch and a half, on about 80 percent coverage, spotty on any one day. Labor Day comes out dry and a little cooler. The first half of September is forecast to run like peak summer over most of the state.

The apples start todayLas manzanas empiezan hoy

Ohio apples begin their most active season today and hold it to late October. Sept. 1 is the hinge of the harvest calendar, and the apple is the crop on the near side of it.Las manzanas de Ohio empiezan hoy su temporada más activa y la mantienen hasta finales de octubre.

Sweet corn has just come off its most active stretch and has roughly to the 25th before it is done for the year. Tomatoes are past their peak and at their best for canning, with a late harvest that can run into October. Peppers, grapes, pears and the first winter squash are in, and melons ended their strong season yesterday. The practical version, for a Tuesday: if you want corn for the freezer, this is the fortnight; if you want apples, wait two weeks and you will do better.

Lake Erie’s bloom grew again this week, to 380 square miles, and the toxins are above the recreational limitLa floración de algas del lago Erie volvió a crecer esta semana, hasta 380 millas cuadradas, y las toxinas superan el límite recreativo

UPDATE, SATURDAY MORNING. This edition went to press at 3:48 a.m. and reported, from the federal bloom bulletin as it then stood, that no recent toxin data was available for western Lake Erie. A later model run this morning reads the other way: toxins have been detected above the recreational limit, they concentrate in surface scum, and people and pets should stay out of water where scum has formed. The headline and two passages below have been amended. The bloom’s extent, 380 square miles, is unchanged and was right. This is not a correction — the paper reported the bulletin it had — but it is the half a reader would act on, so it does not wait for tomorrow.ACTUALIZACIÓN, SÁBADO POR LA MAÑANA.

The cyanobacteria bloom in the western basin of Lake Erie covered roughly 380 square miles when the federal forecasters last put a number on it, larger than it was two days earlier. It runs from Stony Point, Mich., down to Port Clinton, with patches thrown as far east as Sandusky and the islands. The heaviest concentrations are around Maumee Bay — which is to say the Toledo end of the lake.

The bulletin carrying those figures went out Friday and its model was run again at three o’clock this morning. The bulletin this paper read before press said no recent toxin data was available for western Lake Erie. A later run this morning says the data arrived and it is bad: toxins have been detected above the recreational limit. They concentrate in surface scum, and anyone who sees scum should keep themselves and their pets out of the water.

Those are two different questions and only one of them has ever emptied the shelves in this city. Extent is a picture taken from orbit. Toxicity is a number that comes out of water somebody physically goes and collects. It was the second measurement, not the first, that shut Toledo’s taps in August 2014.Son dos preguntas distintas y solo una de ellas ha vaciado alguna vez los estantes de esta ciudad.

The seasonal outlook issued earlier this summer called for a moderate bloom — 3.5 on a severity scale anchored at the mild 2005 season and the record 2011 one, in a range of 3 to 4.5. This paper reported on July 31 that the season had opened small and about three weeks late. It is not small now.

Advisories for individual public beaches remain the state’s job, not the satellite’s. But the bulletin is no longer silent on what to do: it says to stay out of scum, and to keep pets out of it. The forecast does project where the bloom will sit for the next four days, which is the part a person with a boat can actually use. The current bulletin and the position forecast are both on the federal forecast page.

Ohio and Michigan got the same federal report yesterday afternoon and it describes two different emergencies on either side of a line you can drive to from downtown Toledo in ten minutes. The gap has been widening all month. Half of Ohio’s topsoil — 49 percent — is rated surplus, which is the polite word for too wet to drive on. Ohio farmers got 2.1 days of usable fieldwork out of the week. Across the line, 10 percent of Michigan’s topsoil is very short and another 39 percent is short. Michigan got 5.6 days, and would happily have traded some of them for rain.

The crops have not caught up to the difference yet, but they are leaning. Ohio corn is 61 percent good to excellent, 90 percent into the dough stage, 47 percent dented and 4 percent mature. Michigan corn is 55 percent good to excellent, 76 percent dough, 23 percent dented — a good two weeks behind. Soybeans are the sharper split: 58 percent good to excellent in Ohio against 48 in Michigan, which is the weakest condition number on either side of the border.

There is a disease running alongside the dry weather. Michigan’s farm bureau reported on Aug. 19 that tar spot had been confirmed in 11 counties, with Allegan and Arenac the newest. Every county on that list is north or west of here; it has not been confirmed in the Michigan counties this paper covers. Extension advice is that fungicide pays best between silking and the milky-kernel stage, which for a good deal of Michigan corn is now or was last week.

Yellow perch. The western basin’s perch season came on early and came on well this year, and late August is when it stops being a rumor and starts being a cooler full of fish. The bite has been holding around the water intake off Toledo; the walleye are out in the lake and steady.

If you are catching your own, the standing courtesy on the river is to put back anything under about seven inches; a perch that size is next year’s dinner and this year’s waste. If you are buying, the fish markets along the Michigan shore in Monroe County carry Lake Erie fish through the season — walleye was $14.99 a pound at Erie this week, the one price we could confirm.

One honesty note. The most recent dated fishing report we could reach this morning was Aug. 16, so the season is what is confirmed and this week’s bite is not. Call ahead before you drive to the water. Thirty years of listening to frogs in the dark, and four species are going quietTreinta años escuchando ranas en la oscuridad, y cuatro especies se están callando

Larry Martin of Plymouth walks into the woods after dusk twice a month with his border collie and no flashlight, and writes down which of seven frogs and one toad he can hear. He is one of hundreds of volunteers who have surveyed the Rouge River watershed — more than 450 square miles, and an Environmental Protection Agency Area of Concern — for Friends of the Rouge since 1998.Larry Martin, de Plymouth, se interna en el bosque después del anochecer dos veces al mes con su border collie y sin linterna, y anota cuáles de siete ranas y un sapo alcanza a oír.

The group has now analyzed the decades of cards. The share of survey blocks where wood frogs, midland chorus frogs, northern leopard frogs and spring peepers can be heard is trending down, peepers most sharply. American toads, gray treefrogs, green frogs and bullfrogs are trending up. The four in decline are mostly early callers. Monitoring coordinator Sam Davis said recent winters’ temperature swings are “very, very taxing on these early calling species,” with development and climate change likely factors, and that the group is pointing to patterns as a first step rather than a conclusion.

Volunteers have to pass a call-identification test; one of them built a web tool to help people study. Sign-ups reopen in December. Martin is monitoring 14 spots this year. “You’d be surprised how close you can get to the deer at night if you’re just walking through the woods without a light.”Los voluntarios deben aprobar un examen de identificación de cantos; uno de ellos creó una herramienta web para estudiar.

This paper reported on Aug. 16 that $37.6 million of federal money was going into the Maumee and the Ottawa, and on Aug. 17 that the Army Corps was about to start the river's ordinary navigational dredge. What is new is the shape of the largest piece of it. The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority's share is $32.34 million in Great Lakes Restoration Initiative money plus a $1.75 million Ohio EPA match, and it buys the removal of roughly 120,000 cubic yards of sediment from a one-mile reach of the lower river near downtown, between the Seneca Petroleum and Ironville marine terminals by the Wheeling & Lake Erie swing bridge. What is in the mud is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PCBs and heavy metals, at concentrations nobody considers safe. It will be dredged mechanically and put in the Toledo Harbor confined disposal facility, beginning early next spring and running through 2027 and possibly into 2028. The actionable part: there is a public information session on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. at One Maritime Plaza, and it is on the Board below. One number we are not smoothing over: the federal announcement says 121,000 cubic yards and the local account says approximately 120,000 as a first phase. Both are on the record and we are not averaging them.

The Wood County Park District's new strategic plan puts financial stability first, ahead of stewardship, outreach, staff and volunteers, capital improvements and land preservation — and then explains why. Its one-mill levy ends in 2027 with collections through 2028; purchasing power has fallen about 10 percent as costs outran the revenue new construction brings in; and the plan recommends the next levy be increased by 0.35 mill, saying in terms that a straight renewal at the same rate would not fund operations through the next cycle. The district benchmarked itself against seven other park systems and counts more than 1,200 volunteers and friends. Tom James of Environmental Design Group presented it; board president Rebecca Ferguson, Commissioner Jonathan Smith and Friends president Jim Mathew spoke.

The 2026-27 hunting seasons are set, and three counties got a third deerLas temporadas de caza 2026-27 están fijadas, y tres condados ganaron un tercer venado

The Ohio Wildlife Council approved the year's seasons in the spring and they are worth having in front of you before the leaves turn. Statewide deer archery runs Sept. 26 through Feb. 7; youth gun is Nov. 21 and 22; gun season is Nov. 30 through Dec. 6 and again Dec. 19 and 20; muzzleloader is Jan. 2 through 5. The bag limit rises to three deer in Defiance, Paulding and Warren counties, and falls to two in Athens, Meigs and Washington after last year's outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease. Chronic wasting disease surveillance now covers all of Allen County plus townships in Hancock and Crawford, where the seasonal limit is six. Ruffed grouse is permit-only in four controlled areas, and the fall turkey season is shotgun only — no archery. ⚠️ One caution on the early dates. The state's own “September marks the start of Ohio's fall hunting seasons” release currently on its website is last year's, carrying last year's dates. The 2026 dove, teal and early goose dates we found sit on a document still labelled proposed, so we are not printing them. And we found no dated 2026 primary source for Michigan's seasons at all, so we are not printing those either.

The bloom is about 380 square miles now, from Stony Point to just west of MarbleheadLa floración ronda ya las 380 millas cuadradas, de Stony Point a poco al oeste de Marblehead

The federal harmful algal bloom bulletin issued this morning puts the western Lake Erie cyanobacteria bloom at roughly 380 square miles, up from about 280 and growing since Aug. 9. It runs from Stony Point, Mich., east to just west of Marblehead and out toward the islands, with heavy sediment in Maumee Bay. Toxins are detectable and remain below the recreational limit, with the standing caveat that they concentrate in surface scum. Winds above 15 knots at South Bass Island mix the bloom down through the water column.

The lake itself is five inches above its long-term August average and falling: two inches below July, one inch above August of last year, and projected to drop about four inches by mid-September.

A Bowling Green scientist found bloom toxins in the air hundreds of miles from any bloomUn científico de Bowling Green halló toxinas de floración en el aire a cientos de millas de cualquier floración

James Metcalf, who holds the Hollingsworth Smith endowed chair in biological sciences at Bowling Green State University, analyzed 21 air samples taken in southwestern Florida and found airborne cyanobacterial toxins in most of them, at sites with no large-scale bloom. The work was published in the journal Toxins. Metcalf wants to run the same sampling over the Lake Erie footprint, where this region already spends every August watching the water. $32.34 million to take 121,000 cubic yards of poison out of the Maumee$32,34 millones para sacar 121.000 yardas cúbicas de veneno del Maumee

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority announced on Aug. 12 that it has been awarded $32.34 million through the U.S. EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to finish the Lower Maumee River Sway Bridge remediation. The money buys the removal of about 121,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment from a one-mile stretch of river along Front Street, between the Seneca Petroleum Marine Terminal and the Ironville Marine Terminal.

The number worth holding onto is not the grant. It is 1987 — the year the United States and Canada designated the Maumee Area of Concern, covering roughly 787 square miles of northwest Ohio waterways, nearly 1,900 miles of streams and 45 miles of Lake Erie shoreline. Thirty-nine years on, 42 of 53 planned management actions are done, more than 300,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment have been lifted out, more than 3,500 acres of habitat restored, and four beneficial use impairments removed. This is what cleaning a river actually looks like: a generation, and a list.

“This significant investment builds on our ongoing work to restore and protect our region’s natural resources,” said Thomas J. Winston, the port authority’s president and chief executive. The design work, done by EA Engineering, Science, and Technology since March 2024, is complete, which is what allows the dredging to begin.«Esta inversión significativa se suma a nuestro trabajo continuo para restaurar y proteger los recursos naturales de la región», dijo Thomas J. Winston, presidente y director ejecutivo de la autoridad portuaria.

Nine-tenths of a dayNueve décimas de día

That is how much of last week Ohio farmers could actually work: 0.9 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Aug. 16, down from 5.2 the week before. Heavy rain covered most of the state. Topsoil moisture went from 72 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus to 48 percent adequate and 52 percent surplus — a fifty-point swing in seven days. Subsoil is 62 percent adequate, 33 percent surplus.

The strange part is that the crop does not seem to mind. Corn improved to 66 percent good to excellent (52 good, 14 excellent) from 62 percent, and soybeans to 61 percent from 59. Corn is 100 percent silked and 81 percent in the dough stage against a five-year average of 68 — well ahead. The one stage running behind is denting, at 15 percent against an average of 17. Soybeans are 100 percent bloomed and 89 percent setting pods against an 81 percent average. The oat harvest is the real casualty of a wet week: 88 percent complete against a 96 percent average, because oats have to be cut and nobody could get on the ground.

At the close Monday: September corn $4.65, up six cents. September soybeans $12.01, up 23¼ cents. September Chicago wheat $6.74¾, unchanged. Michigan’s crop progress report could not be obtained before press this morning, so the figures above are Ohio’s alone; the two-state comparison returns next Tuesday. There is a fortnight in a northwest Ohio August when a peach is worth the drive, and this is it. MacQueen Orchards, at 7605 Garden Road in Holland — the corner of Gunn and Garden — grows seven varieties of peach alongside more than sixteen of apple, and sells them off its own counter with sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage, green beans, cauliflower and squash. The market is open every day but the major holidays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. May through October, and it takes WIC and Senior Nutrition coupons. The phone is (419) 865-2916. The Toledo Farmers’ Market, 525 Market St., runs Saturdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. into November; (419) 255-6765. One honest caution: both of those places publish standing seasonal hours and neither posts a dated list of what is on the table this week, so call before you drive. And do not plan to cook it. The bloom is 280 square miles and it starts on Michigan's shoreLa floración mide 280 millas cuadradas y empieza en la costa de Michigan

NOAA's bulletin puts the western Lake Erie cyanobacteria bloom at roughly 280 square miles, running from Stony Point, Michigan to Marblehead, Ohio, heaviest in Maumee Bay, with cyanobacteria possibly present as far east as Huron. Toxins have been detected below the recreational limit — which is the sentence to read twice, because the same bulletin warns they “can be highly concentrated in scums.” Below the limit in open water is not below the limit in the green stuff against the seawall. Forecast positions are modelled for Monday and Thursday. ⚠️ Two caveats we are not hiding: cloud cover has been obscuring the satellite imagery the estimate rests on, and NOAA's own pages date the 280-square-mile measurement to two different days a few days apart. Practical version, unchanged: look before you swim, keep dogs out of visibly green water, and expect the back half of August to be worse than the front.

Thursday's bulletin puts the western Lake Erie bloom at 280 square miles — “an increase in area since Aug 06” in its own words — with the higher concentrations in Maumee Bay. Toxins have been detected below the recreational limit, which is the good half of the sentence; the other half is the standing one, that toxins concentrate in surface scum. Where the water looks like spilled paint, keep out and keep the dog out. Mid-August into September is historically the peak.

The bloom grew again this week — 280 square miles, Stony Point to MarbleheadLa floración creció otra vez esta semana — 280 millas cuadradas, de Stony Point a Marblehead

Thursday's bulletin puts the western basin cyanobacteria bloom at roughly 280 square miles, an increase in area since Aug. 6, running from Stony Point, Michigan, to Marblehead, with the heaviest concentrations in Maumee Bay and possible presence near Huron. Toxins have been detected in the western basin below the recreational limit — but they concentrate sharply in surface scums, which is why the advice never changes: if you can see scum, keep people and dogs out of it.El boletín del jueves ubica la floración de cianobacterias de la cuenca occidental en unas 280 millas cuadradas, un aumento respecto al 6 de agosto, extendiéndose de Stony Point, Michigan, hasta Marblehead, con las mayores concentraciones en la bahía de Maumee y posible presencia cerca de Huron.

The bloom turned around: 280 square miles and growing La floración dio la vuelta: 280 millas cuadradas y creciendo

This morning's NOAA bulletin corrects the lake's trend line, and the paper's with it: the western Lake Erie bloom now covers about 280 square miles — "an increase in area since Aug 06," in the bulletin's own words, after last week's readings had it near 220 and shrinking. It stretches from Stony Point, Michigan to Marblehead, thickest in Maumee Bay, with possible presence near Huron. The saving grace holds: toxins remain below the recreational limit. The standing rule holds too — the toxin concentrates in surface scum, so where you see the paint slick, keep yourself and the dog out. Mid-August to September is historically peak season; the bloom is behaving like it read the almanac.

The Sleepy Hollow Park fish die-off — under investigation since late July, with low dissolved oxygen the working theory — may have found its cause. WTOL's headline Wednesday: "Ohio EPA: UT cooling-system discharge entered Ottawa River amid reported fish kill." That is a University of Toledo discharge, per the state's own environmental agency — a significant turn, and the paper prints it as exactly what it has: a headline from a station whose pages this desk cannot open, with the fuller account to follow when it can be read. If the EPA has traced the water, the story has months left in it.

Yesterday this paper admitted it had missed the opening of Pontiac Preserve and promised to go walk it. Here is what it is: 59 acres on the lower Maumee at 3100 North Summit Street, opened August 3, built on a former confined disposal facility — the diked containment where dredged river sediment used to be parked. It cost $750,000, most of it a $498,000 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant, with city capital funds and $10,000 from Cleveland-Cliffs. You get a permeable-paver accessible lot, a one-mile trail, two overlook decks on the river, and interpretive signage. Rep. Kaptur, who called it "a new gem for residents," and Mayor Kapszukiewicz cut the ribbon with the public service director, Joe Fausnaugh.

The thing worth saying out loud: this is a piece of the river that was industrial waste management inside living memory, and it is now a place to stand and look at the Maumee. Toledo has been doing this quietly for years — Middlegrounds, Glass City Metropark, now this — and the cumulative effect is that the city's relationship to its own river has changed more in fifteen years than in the previous hundred.

After doubling in a week to roughly 200 square miles by Monday's estimate, the harmful algal bloom shrank — NOAA's Friday bulletin put it near 220 square miles but decreasing since Wednesday, stretched from Stony Point, Michigan, to Marblehead, with the densest water in Maumee Bay. The number that matters most: toxins remain below the recreational-contact threshold. Context holds steady — a "moderate" season (3.5 severity) running weeks behind recent years, with the true peak still ahead, mid-August into September. Swim smart; check the water before you launch anything. Dead fish at Sleepy Hollow Park, and the likeliest culprit is the heatPeces muertos en el parque Sleepy Hollow, y el culpable más probable es el calor

Dozens of dead fish surfaced in the pond at Sleepy Hollow Park, near Dorr and Richards, and the city's Environmental Services division is investigating. The working suspicion is not a spill but physics: hot water holds less oxygen, and a long stretch of upper-80s days can suffocate a shallow pond from the inside. A finding either way is worth watching for — and this paper notes the story surfaced in a certain Saturday newsletter a full week before the TV cameras got there.

Briefly, because we said most of this yesterday: NOAA's weekly bloom bulletin is now eight days late — the live file still resolves to Bulletin 7, July 30 — while the agency's daily satellite notes keep working: bloom near 340 square miles, Monroe down to Port Clinton, thickest in Maumee Bay, toxins in open water still below the recreational limit. One new wrinkle in the daily read: cyanobacteria may also be present near Huron, Ohio, east of the bloom's usual footprint. Same advice as always, now with a longer shoreline attached.

The federal bloom bulletin is now a week late. The bloom did not wait.

We pulled NOAA's live bulletin file again before dawn: still Bulletin 7, dated July 30 — the weekly forecast is now a full week overdue, with severity holding at a moderate 3.5 on paper. Meanwhile the agency's daily satellite notes, which keep updating even while the formal bulletin doesn't, describe a bloom of roughly 340 square miles, stretching from north of Monroe down to Port Clinton, thickest in Maumee Bay, and larger than it was at the start of the week. The saving grace holds: open-water toxin readings in the western basin remain below the recreational limit. The standing advice doesn't change: swim where the water looks like water, not like spilled paint; keep dogs out of visible scum entirely; and if you're headed to the islands today for Lake Erie Awareness Day, the lake will be both the classroom and the exhibit.

A final ODNR species count and the Sleepy Hollow Park pond results are both still pending. The lake, for now, is behaving better than the things draining into it. The bloom bulletin is due to refresh any hour — and the lake is quietly cooperating El boletín del florecimiento debe actualizarse en cualquier momento — y el lago coopera en silencio

We pulled NOAA's live bulletin file Monday afternoon and it still resolves to Bulletin 7, issued Thursday July 30 — so officially nothing has changed. The bloom holds at a predicted severity 3.5 (range 3–4.5), a moderate season that began around July 12 in Maumee Bay and is expected to stay mostly in the western basin, peaking mid-to-late August. NOAA issues these twice a week in season, which means Bulletin 8 should drop Tuesday or Wednesday. When you check, use the bulletin itself, not NOAA's HAB landing page — that page has been serving badly stale text claiming there's no observable bloom, which is a caching error, not the lake. The good news underneath the numbers: this weekend's cooler, breezier weather is the opposite of what toxin-concentrating surface scums need, and the bloom is running about three weeks behind last year's pace.

A month after the fish kill and days after the pond, we're still waiting on both Un mes después de la mortandad y días después del estanque, seguimos esperando ambos

Two water stories from earlier reporting are sitting in the same place: unresolved. On the Maumee River, the estimate from the July 3 liquid-fertilizer spill out of Huston Creek in Henry County holds at roughly 24,500 fish across 11 miles; Ohio EPA issued violations to Triway Nitrogen and Farmers Elevator Associates, and the Ohio Department of Agriculture opened its own probe — but no final ODNR species count and no cleanup-complete date have surfaced in August. Closer in, the city of Toledo sampled the Sleepy Hollow Park pond die-off on July 30 for dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH, suspecting summer heat and low oxygen; those results have not been released either. Neither of these is a case of nothing happening. It's a case of the public information not having caught up to the water. We'll carry both when the agencies do.

The count from the July 3 liquid-fertilizer spill out of Huston Creek in Henry County has climbed to an estimated 24,500 fish across an 11-mile stretch of the Maumee River, from the mouth of Huston Creek down to the Campbell's Soup area near Napoleon. The estimate has moved twice — "up to 20,000" on July 13, then 24,500 — and cleanup is still running four weeks on. Ohio EPA issued two violations on July 11, to Triway Nitrogen and Farmers Elevator Associates. Now the Ohio Department of Agriculture has opened its own investigation into potential violations, making it a second agency on the file. A dam failure was connected to the creek contamination. Responding agencies include Ohio EPA, ODNR, the Henry County Engineer, Henry County EMA and Napoleon Fire & Rescue. Napoleon officials say the drinking water supply is safe. ODNR's species breakdown and final count were still being compiled at press time. It holds at a predicted severity 3.5 (range 3–4.5), a bloom that began around July 12 in Maumee Bay and is expected to stay mostly in the western basin, peaking mid-to-late August. Two details from the document worth carrying: roughly 10 additional metric tons of bioavailable phosphorus loaded through July, and lake stratification is currently keeping surface and bottom waters separated. Toxins concentrate in surface scums that form during calm weather — and this weekend is the opposite of calm, which for once works in the lake's favor. Bulletins run twice weekly in season, so No. 8 should land Monday or Tuesday. That is the same window Toledo processes its own water: microcystin samples are collected weekly and analyzed on Tuesdays. Separately, the city has still not released results from the Sleepy Hollow Park pond die-off it sampled July 30 for dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH; it suspects elevated water temperature and low oxygen. Water temperature off Toledo is 81°F, which is consistent with that. Do not confuse it with the Henry County spill — different cause, different river, 60 miles apart.

SOURCE WARNING: NOAA's own HAB landing page was serving badly stale text this morning, stating there is "currently no observable cyanobacteria bloom in the Western Basin" with a model date of July 7. That contradicts NOAA's own current bulletin and is almost certainly a caching artifact. We went with the bulletin PDF. If you check the web page yourself and it says the lake is clear, it is wrong.

ODNR's latest posted fishing report (dated July 17 — the state's updates have lagged) has the walleye action east of the reef complex and near Kelleys Island, drifting or trolling 23–30 feet of water with lures running 15–30 feet down. Yellow perch — the fish that's struggled for years — are starting to show south of Green Island and near the Toledo Shipping Channel in 22–25 feet; crappie rigs with minnows fished near bottom are doing the work. Meanwhile the Army Corps' gauges have Lake Erie at about four inches above its July long-term average (two below last year), with the usual seasonal decline beginning — about two inches off by early August.

No results yet on the fish die-off at Sleepy Hollow Park (Dorr and Richards), first reported Thursday afternoon: the city's Environmental Services crews sampled the pond for dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH, and the working theory remains the unglamorous one — a hot, still week starving a shallow pond of oxygen. The city says it will publish the results when they're back; we'll keep checking.

Toledo's Environmental Services team collected water samples this afternoon at Sleepy Hollow Park, at Dorr and Richards, after dozens of dead fish turned up along the water line. The city's working theory is the summer classic — elevated water temperature plus low dissolved oxygen — rather than a pollutant, but samples are being tested for oxygen, temperature and pH, with results to follow. Worth watching alongside tonight's "patchy smoke" forecast: a hot, stagnant stretch is hard on small water everywhere, and the big lake's bloom season is still pending its overdue federal update.

Daily bloom check: as of this morning, NOAA's Lake Erie bulletin still reports no observable cyanobacteria bloom in the western basin, with only a local mixed bloom hanging around Sandusky Bay. That continues to beat the June seasonal forecast, which called for a moderate bloom (severity 3.5) visible by mid-July. The catch: NOAA promised a late-July update based on Maumee watershed nutrient loads, and its model hasn't been refreshed since July 7 — the revision is now overdue, and this digest checks every issue. On the water itself, the state's latest report has walleye biting east of the reef complex and near Kelleys Island in 23–30 feet, with yellow perch developing south of Green Island and off the Toledo shipping channel (ODNR report dated July 17).

Re-checked this evening: NOAA still reports "no observable cyanobacteria bloom in the Western Basin," with a local mixed bloom in Sandusky Bay. The June 25 seasonal forecast — a moderate year, severity 3.5 in a range of 3 to 4.5, visible bloom expected by mid-July — remains the official word; the promised late-July update has still not posted. Mid-July has come and gone with a clear western basin, which so far beats the forecast.

July angler reports put the walleye bite strongest at 6–8 a.m. northeast of Kelleys Island near the "old C-can," trolling small spoons at 2.7–3.0 mph, downriggers around 30 feet, with Fish Ohio-class fish at 28–29 inches. The Army Corps' most recent verified weekly figure has Lake Erie at 572.38 feet — 2 inches below last year, 4 above the long-term July average — drifting down 1 to 4 inches by early August.

NOAA's Lake Erie HAB forecast page, checked this morning, reports "no observable cyanobacteria bloom in the Western Basin," with a local bloom of mixed cyanobacteria in Sandusky Bay. The June 25 seasonal forecast calls for a moderate year — severity index 3.5, in a range of 3 to 4.5 — with a visible bloom expected by mid-July; the posted model update is dated July 7, and NOAA's promised late-July seasonal update hadn't appeared as of press time. We'll keep checking each issue through September.
