At 107, Montpelier’s Winzeler Manufacturing keeps changing what it makesA los 107 años, Winzeler Manufacturing, de Montpelier, sigue cambiando lo que fabrica

Winzeler Manufacturing Company, at 129 W. Wabash Ave. in Montpelier, Ohio, was founded in 1919 and has been in Montpelier since 1923. By its own account, it has lasted 107 years by adapting to changing markets, moving from one product line to the next. The latest change came at the end of 2022, when the company sold off its Coupling & Ferrule Division, the line it had built on a patent taken out in 1925.Winzeler Manufacturing Company, en 129 W. Wabash Ave., en Montpelier, Ohio, se fundó en 1919 y está en Montpelier desde 1923.

It began with an order and no shop. D.W. Winzeler, known as Uncle Dan, had an idea for a metal brace to replace the wooden dowels that reed-furniture makers had to soften with hot water or steam and bend by hand. Fred Green, who ran the Ypsilanti Fibre Furniture Company in Ionia, Mich., and who became governor of Michigan in 1927, gave him the order and a $5,000 check at a point when, by the company’s own account, Dan “had neither a company nor equipment.” His brother Henry put up space and machines in the basement of The Ohio Art Company, in Bryan, and the partnership was dissolved in 1923 when the works moved to Montpelier.Empezó con un pedido y sin taller. D.W.

After that the shop kept finding the next thing to make. Steel folding chairs came in the mid-1920s. The 1925 patent was for a tubular steel strap joining a wooden handle to a rake, a hoe, a hay fork or a shovel, and the ferrule it led to became the company’s mainstay. Hose ferrules followed in the 1930s, then stamped brass couplings for garden hoses. The war years brought millions of pup-tent pole ferrules, plus Zippo lighters. Late in the 1950s brass furniture-leg ferrules became what the company calls “the fashion of the times,” and it sold them to RCA, Philco, Motorola and G.E. In the 1980s and 1990s the work turned to custom stampings for carmakers and industrial customers.

The 2022 sale went to Winzeler Couplings & Metals LLC, an affiliate of US Wire and Cable Corp., whose lawn-and-watering division had been a large and long-time customer. Michael D. Winzeler is the chief executive of what the company calls a fourth-generation family business, which supplies stampings and machined parts to carmakers, heavy-equipment builders and class-eight truck makers.

The job cuts at the Insteel Wire Products Company plant at 1200 N. Warpole St. in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, begin today. The plant itself does not go dark today. The company’s notice to the state and the city puts the first separations on Oct. 20, 2026, “or within 14 days thereafter,” and says employees “will remain after that date to assist with the winding down and decommissioning of the Plant.”Los recortes de empleo en la planta de Insteel Wire Products Company, en 1200 N. Warpole St., en Upper Sandusky, Ohio, empiezan hoy.

The separations run far past the end of the month the company’s August announcement pointed to. The notice says they will happen “on an as needed basis until the Plant is closed,” with all of them accomplished by April 30, 2027, again with the 14-day margin. That is six months of winding down after the first paycheck stops.

Up to 65 people lose their jobs, which the notice describes as “all individuals employed by the Company at the Plant.” The plant makes welded wire reinforcement, the steel mesh set into concrete, and the company said in August that the work moves to its other welded-wire plants. Nothing in the notice says what becomes of the building.

The notice says non-union employees have no bumping rights, and that the union contract gives some but they are “expected to be of little consequence since the entire Plant will be closed.” The union employees are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the notice gives their local as IBT Local 52 and its president and business agent as Brandon Jackenheimer.

The letter is dated Aug. 21, 2026 and signed by Elizabeth C. Southern, the company’s vice president of administration, secretary and chief legal officer. It went to the state’s rapid-response office in Columbus and to Upper Sandusky’s City Council President Julia Lemire and City Clerk Sarah Bennett, both at 119 N. Seventh St. Upper Sandusky is in Wyandot County, at the southeastern edge of this paper’s map.
