The Lake Erie Inquiry

CorrectionsCorrecciones

When we get something wrong, we correct it. We say what was wrong, give the right information and explain how the mistake happened when that helps readers understand it.Cuando nos equivocamos, lo corregimos.

Corrections appear with the affected story and are collected here.

Report an errorReporte un error

WRITE TOESCRIBA A

Write to info@lakeerieinquiry.org. If you can, include the headline, edition date or story link, and tell us what you think is wrong. Send a document or source link if you have one. You don’t need to prove the error before contacting us. The checking is our job.Escriba a info@lakeerieinquiry.org.

What happens nextQué ocurre después

We review the claim against the sources and check further where needed. If we made a factual error, we correct it. If the reporting needs clarification, we explain it.Revisamos el reclamo contra las fuentes y seguimos verificando cuando hace falta.

Our standardNuestra norma

Say what was wrong and what is rightDecir qué estaba mal y qué es lo correcto

A correction identifies the mistake and supplies the correct information. Saying only that a story “has been updated” does not tell readers enough.

The corrected story stays at its original address. A visible correction note appears with the story, in the issue that carried the mistake, in the next issue’s corrections line and in this archive.

Take responsibilityAsumir la responsabilidad

Repeating a source’s mistake does not relieve us of responsibility for publishing it.

When credible sources disagree about a fact that matters to the story, we identify the disagreement, attribute the accounts and explain what we could establish. We do not present an unresolved claim as a settled fact.

Corrections, clarifications and updatesCorrecciones, aclaraciones y actualizaciones

A correction fixes something we published incorrectly: a name, number, date, quotation, location or other fact. That includes presenting an old development as new or giving a photograph the wrong credit, license or date.

A clarification makes wording more precise when it could leave readers with a mistaken impression.

An update adds a later development. A vote taken after publication, for example, does not make an earlier report that the vote was pending incorrect. The same goes for news still in motion: a fire, a chemical release or an evacuation changes by the hour, and we update the story as officials report new information. If the earlier story was wrong at the time it ran, it needs a correction.

Routine changes to spelling (other than a name), punctuation or layout that do not affect meaning do not require a correction note. A change that alters what readers understood does.

Corrected editionsEdiciones corregidas

A substantial correction may require us to replace an edition with a corrected printing. It keeps the same date, issue number and web address. The correction note identifies what changed.

The archive below preserves the correction notices as they appeared and links to the affected editions. Each entry shows the date of the edition that carries the notice. CORRECTION — WHAT THE NINE VOTES WERE FOR The first printing of this story (No. 84, Oct. 21) said the resolution’s emergency clause was why it was not taken up Tuesday, and that nothing in the city’s record showed how members voted. The nine votes were needed to suspend the council rule that requires two readings, as the clerk explained at the meeting, and the city’s meeting video records each member’s vote. CORRECTION — THE WHEAT AND THE WET WEEK The first printing of this story (No. 84, Oct. 21), under the headline “The wheat is what the wet week cost,” said winter wheat did not move with the other crops that week, that its 24-point gap behind the five-year average was the widest of any line in the federal report for Ohio or Michigan, that three quarters of the week’s rain fell on Wednesday, and that the soybean gap narrowed while the corn gap held. Ohio’s wheat planting rose 21 points that week, from 17% to 38%, and its gap behind the average narrowed from 26 points to 24. Michigan’s corn-maturity gap, 27 points, is wider. CORRECTION — FOUR SEARCH COUNTS. The first printing of this story (No. 57, Sept. 24) gave four counts that were too high. The agencies missing from Flock’s published list ran 3,881,545 searches, 35 percent of every search that reached Oregon’s cameras, not 4,034,020 and 36 percent. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office ran 11,595, not 11,722. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation ran 6,766, not 7,155. The Johnson County, Texas Sheriff’s Office ran 5,423, not 5,914, and 846 in July 2026, not 1,337. Oregon’s monthly search logs overlap, so the same search can appear in two files. Every other count in this story was made after those repeats were removed; these four were made before, and this paper did not recount them before printing. CORRECTION — THE ROSSFORD QUIKTRIP. The first printing of Tuesday’s edition (No. 55, Sept. 22) reported that QuikTrip’s store locator listed its Rossford travel center, at 875 Glenwood Rd., with a telephone number and no hours, and that no opening date had been announced for either of the chain’s two Wood County stores. The Rossford store opened Feb. 19, 2026, as the Rossford Record Journal reported Feb. 25, and the locator now lists it as open 24 hours. This paper read the locator and did not check whether the store was already open. The item is corrected in a second printing of that edition, Wednesday, Sept. CORRECTION — WHAT TARTA HAS ALREADY PUBLISHED. The first printing of Saturday’s edition (No. 52, Sept. 19) said TARTA had not said what the bus rapid transit line would cost, how many stations it would have, or when it would be built. Only the cost is absent. TARTA’s own corridor map brochure, published with the study, names about thirty potential station locations by street pair, from Monroe-Corey Cove in Sylvania to Navarre-Schmidlin in Oregon, and carries a project timeline: the corridor study 2025–2026, the locally preferred alternative written into the regional transportation plan in 2026, a 30 percent design phase in 2026–2028, and Safe Streets for All safety work on Monroe Street from 2026 to 2031. No construction date appears in it, and “potential” is the map’s own word for the stations — but the paper reported an absence where there was a published document. This desk’s own notes for that edition record that the study page pointed at the corridor map and a frequently-asked-questions sheet and that neither was opened before the item ran. Both have now been read at source. The item is corrected in a second printing of that edition, Sunday, Sept.

He signed House Bill 311 on June 8 and House Bill 292 on July 7, according to the Ohio General Assembly’s record; the lawmakers’ announcements were dated Sept. 14 and 15. Sunday’s edition (No. 46, Sept. 13) gave 513 Excellence LLC, the hotel’s new owner, a mailing address in Chicago, and said the county’s record carried no price and no date of transfer. The county lists the buyer as an Ohio limited liability company; the Chicago address is the tax-mailing address on the record, which does not show where the buyer is based. The Lucas County Auditor’s transfer record, available before the edition ran, shows the hotel sold by First TDT LLC for $11 million in a sale dated Sept. 3. Corrected in a later printing of that edition, Saturday, Oct. 3.CORRECCIÓN — EL COMPRADOR DEL HOTEL RENAISSANCE. CORRECTION — THE HOUR OF MONDAY’S WALK. The Community Board in the first printings of Friday’s edition (No. 44, Sept. 11) and Saturday’s (No. 45, Sept. 12) gave the Middlegrounds Metropark 10th-anniversary nature walk as Monday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. It begins at noon, at the Rotary Pavilion, and runs to 1 p.m.; reservations are required and it costs $5, neither of which this paper printed. Metroparks Toledo lists it that way on its own program page, and this paper’s own report of Sept. 10 said noon. The 11 a.m. belongs to a different event — the history tour on Friday, Sept. 25. The listing was assembled by machine from a note holding both dates, and the second date’s hour was attached to the first. Both editions are corrected in second printings, Saturday, Sept. 12. No. 44 also printed the name of an internal file where the meeting place belonged; that is corrected in the same printing.CORRECCIÓN — LA HORA DE LA CAMINATA DEL LUNES. The city’s own ordinance, O-385-26, names the case “Singletary et al, v. City of Toledo,” and the federal docket — Singletary v. City of Toledo, Ohio, 3:23-cv-00332 in the Northern District of Ohio, filed Feb. 21, 2023 — records the complaint of Warren Singletary and Kimberly Cunningham. CORRECTION — DISTRICT 2’S COUNCIL MEMBER Last night’s Evening Edition (No. 41 Evening, Sept. 8), mapping Toledo’s 109 Flock cameras by council district, named Matt Cherry as the member for District 2. District 2 is represented by Adam Martinez, who chairs council’s Water Quality committee and who spoke about his district’s camera count at Tuesday’s council meeting. The error was in a roster this paper had not re-checked against the city’s own list. The camera counts themselves were right, and Mr. Martinez’s account of them on Tuesday matched ours. The map is corrected and runs again with this morning’s lead, and last night’s edition has been reprinted with the right name. Eight of the sixteen sites are private or religious schools: Trinity Lutheran, Maumee Valley Country Day, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Toledo Christian, St. Patrick’s, St. Joan of Arc, St. John’s Jesuit and the diocese-owned CYO Field. The public sites are Beverly, Byrnedale, Harvard, Glendale-Feilbach and McTigue elementaries and the Bowsher and Rogers stadiums. This paper described the list before the list was public, from the ordinance summary, which says only “various school locations.” The site list became public in the records released Sept. CORRECTION — TOLEDO’S WATER BILL A YEAR AGO. The first printing of Tuesday’s edition (No. 41, Sept. 8) gave the 2025 water, sewer and storm bill for a Toledo household using 4 ccf a month as $66.91, and the rise to 2026 as 16 percent. That figure came from the city’s discounted Water Rate Assistance Program column, not the standard rates. Under the city’s water and sewer ordinances (O-643-23 and O-242-24), the 2025 bill was $74.30, and the rise to this year’s $77.82 is 4.7 percent. The refuse fee’s rise, from $11.50 to $18.50, was reported correctly. The figures are corrected in a second printing of that edition, Saturday, Oct. 3.CORRECCIÓN — LA FACTURA DE AGUA DE TOLEDO HACE UN AÑO. The department’s own news release, dated Sept. 30, 2025, says the program launched Sept. 29, 2025. A year from that date ends about a week before the law takes effect Oct. 6. RAN AUG. 13, 2026PUBLICADA EL 13 DE AGOSTO DE 2026

CORRECTION — THE BRAKE-LINE CASE. Yesterday's paper reported that a Toledo couple "was indicted" in the brake-line case as if the charges were news, and yesterday's extra said the case had "grown a motive." Both framings were wrong about time. The offenses date to November 2025 — the probation-officer impersonation on November 7, the brake-line cutting on November 16 — and the indictment came in late February 2026, reported at the time by 13abc. What actually happened this week was a guilty plea: Kenneth Upchurch, on August 11, to telecommunication fraud and a reduced retaliation charge. The paper presented a months-old case as a fresh one; the archive knew better, and the desk should have checked it. The crime-timeliness rule adopted this week — every crime item must carry two dates, when it happened and what today's hook is — exists because of this error, and today's Crime & Courts item is written under it.CORRECCIÓN — EL CASO DE LAS LÍNEAS DE FRENO.

Yesterday's issue ran Thursday's feature slot on a Wednesday: it invoked the Restaurant Alert's skip clause and ran What's in Season in its place, while skipping Wednesday's actual rota — The Other Toledo, Lend a Hand, and The Arborists dispatch — entirely. Worse, the footer then stated that "the Wednesday rota ran per its rules." It did not, and that sentence was false. The sting is sharpened by the fact that The Other Toledo would have been the easiest feature of the week: the actual mayor of the other Toledo had just been in this one. What's in Season's Wednesday appearance stands as printed (it was legal under the old fallback rule as misapplied); its proper home is now Friday, where it runs weekly. Today's paper runs the correct Thursday rota.CORRECCIÓN — EL MIÉRCOLES QUE CORRIÓ CON LAS REGLAS DEL JUEVES.

CORRECTION — THE LIONS ARE THE VISITORS. Four recent calendars (Aug 9–12) listed tonight's Lions preseason opener as "vs. Cincinnati, Ford Field." The game is at Cincinnati, at Paycor Stadium, 7 p.m. Anyone who drove to Ford Field on this paper's word would have found it dark, and the paper apologizes for the gas money.CORRECCIÓN — LOS LIONS SON LOS VISITANTES.

CORRECTION Wednesday's Evening Extra reported that "we found no public concession from Stevens by press time." In fact, Haley Stevens had conceded and endorsed Abdul El-Sayed earlier that same day. The statement was public on her own channels; our check relied on news coverage that lagged behind it, and that was our failure, not the record's.

CORRECTION Monday's edition (No. 5) reported that the Toledo Public Schools November levy would raise "more than $30 million a year." That figure was wrong. It is a five-year, 6.9-mill levy that would raise about $22.8 million a year and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $242 a year. The corrected item runs in Government, above.
