The gap between the top of that table and the bottom is the shape of the arts economy here. The Toledo Museum of Art reported $72,028,653 coming in against $29,578,022 going out in the year to June 2023. Two cautions belong with these numbers. A Form 990 revenue line carries gifts, grants and investment returns as well as ticket sales, so a year in the black on this measure is not the same as an operating surplus, and a single large bequest can make one. The five also do not share a fiscal year: the museum’s closes in June, the opera’s in May and the Arts Commission’s in December, so these are the same year only in name.Dos advertencias acompañan a estas cifras. Georgia O’Keeffe: Architecture opened at the Detroit Institute of Arts on Sept. 11 and runs through Jan. 3. The Toledo Museum of Art is acquiring the 380-piece Ethiopian antiquities collection of the New York financier Robert McCarthy Jr., 71, roughly two-thirds of it donated and the rest purchased at prices set by an independent appraiser. Objects shown to have left Ethiopia illegally go back. Objects shown to have been exported legally stay in Toledo. The pieces in between get decided jointly, and the museum expects that perhaps hundreds may eventually return. The research may take decades, with the works shown in both countries in the meantime. Five items are already marked for return, among them two 15th-century religious manuscripts found to have left Ethiopia after 1970.Los objetos que se demuestre que salieron ilegalmente de Etiopía regresan. The line the museum drew is stricter than the one the law requires. The cutoff is 1970, the year of the UNESCO convention on illicit trafficking. Ethiopia’s own patrimony law dates from 1981. Curator in charge Sophie Ong has said the earlier date is the museum’s choice. Abebaw Ayalew Gella, director general of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, called the arrangement “a model approach to cultural heritage.” The museum’s director is Adam M. The arrangement grew out of the museum’s own 2024 exhibition, Ethiopia at the Crossroads. Toledo was already buying Ethiopian work before that show: its collection database lists a two-panel icon of King Lalibäla from about 1500, bought in 2021 with Libbey Endowment money, and a Ge’ez psalter of about 1400 to 1500 running to 141 folios, bought the same year from the Stevens Fund. That psalter is the same class of object as two of the five pieces already designated for return. What separates the ones Toledo keeps from the ones it sends back is a provenance record, and the length of the search is the measure of how thin those records are. The McCarthy objects had not appeared in the museum’s public catalogue as of Sept. 2.El acuerdo nació de la propia exposición del museo en 2024, Ethiopia at the Crossroads. The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo is taking applications for its 2026 Merit Awards — three awards of $4,000 each, for established or mid-career artists in the literary, performing and visual arts. Applicants must have kept a studio or a residence within 30 miles of downtown Toledo for at least two consecutive years. Applications close Sunday, Sept. 27 at 11:59 p.m., through the commission’s own page.Premios al Mérito, con fecha límite. The People’s Choice went to “Leaving the Past Behind,” by Gary Hovey and Jim Perrine of New Knoxville, Ohio.
