Harold A. McMaster was born in Deshler, Ohio, in 1916 and died in 2003. He took a master’s degree at Ohio State University in physics, mathematics and astronomy in 1939 and went to work for Libbey-Owens-Ford in Toledo. His first inventions were wartime ones: a rear-view periscope for fighter aircraft, and electrically conductive coatings that kept ice off an aircraft windshield.Harold A. What he is remembered for is glass. He founded Permaglass in 1948 to sell the tempering process he had patented: heat the sheet, cool it fast, and it comes out stronger and bendable. He co-founded Glasstech in 1971 to build the machines that do it. The part that still matters here came last. In 1990 he started Solar Cells Inc. to make thin-film cadmium telluride panels. A solar cell is a coating, and he had spent 40 years on coated glass. First Solar’s own registration statement, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, names Solar Cells Inc. as the company’s predecessor. The industry he left behind got cheaper fast. On April 8, 2026 the university was named to lead the Great Lakes Partnership to Enhance the Nuclear Workforce. The U.S. Department of Energy put $19.2 million into a $39 million program to train nuclear workers. The Greater Toledo Community Foundation has two grant windows open, and both close next month. One thing to know before the deadline is how slowly the money moves after it. The Lucas County commissioners appointed Sandra Rivers-Gill the county’s poet laureate at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8. She is the fourth person to hold the post, and she told the board she is its second woman and its first African-American. The commissioners created the position by resolution in 2007, and the first laureate, Joel Lipman, served from 2008. Her chapbook “As We Cover Ourselves With Light” was a finalist for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award. She edited “Dopeless Hope Fiends,” written by women in recovery, “Vibrant Voices,” written by older adults, and “Amplify,” and she teaches poetry at Naomi Inc., a treatment center where she also sits on the board. Metroparks Toledo wants people who will lead a hike. A new program of pop-up nature walks starts this month across all 19 Metroparks, and the walks are led by volunteers rather than staff. A leader picks the park, the day and the length, anywhere from an hour to a full day, and announces it days ahead rather than months.Metroparks Toledo busca gente dispuesta a guiar una caminata. The state representative for Ohio’s 75th district is a Perrysburg Republican named Haraz N. Ghanbari. The law’s effect is hard to see from outside a store. Clean Your Streams Day turns thirty this month. Partners for Clean Streams runs it on Saturday, Sept. 26, and it is the one morning a year when several hundred people walk the Ottawa, Swan Creek and the Maumee’s smaller tributaries and carry out what the water has collected. Volunteers are assigned to a site, given bags and gloves, and turned loose for about three hours. Groups, families and people who have never done it are all taken. Two years later the Toledo Museum of Art has given her the Community Gallery in the Glass Pavilion for “Origin Point,” which runs through Dec. 27. Roughly half of it is work made since her time at BGSU; the other half was made for this show.
