Washington Township is asking its voters for a new, additional 3.25-mill levy for police, with no end date. The ballot puts the cost at $114 a year for every $100,000 of a home’s market value, and the county auditor estimates it would raise $202,382 a year, first due in 2027.El municipio de Washington pide a sus votantes un impuesto nuevo y adicional de 3.25 milésimas para la policía, sin fecha de vencimiento.
What is a mill?¿Qué es una milésima?
A mill is $1 of tax for every $1,000 of a property’s taxable value. In Ohio, taxable value is 35% of the county auditor’s market value, so 3.25 mills on a $100,000 home comes to $113.75 a year, which the ballot rounds to $114.Una milésima es $1 de impuesto por cada $1,000 del valor gravable de una propiedad.

Who pays it?¿Quién lo paga?
Owners of property in Washington Township, Lucas County. A home the auditor values at $150,000 would pay about $171 a year.
What would the money pay for?¿Qué pagaría el dinero?
The township police department. The ballot gives the purpose only as “police funding.” The trustees’ May 12 resolution declaring the levy necessary gives one reason: that taxes raised within the township’s 10-mill limit are “insufficient for the current Washington Township police expenses.” Neither the ballot nor the resolution says how the new money would be spent.
Why is the township asking?¿Por qué lo pide el municipio?
Through September, the township’s police levy fund took in $786,178 and spent $613,109, according to its September fund summary, leaving $350,133 not yet committed. The fund ended 2025 with $264,706, according to its December 2025 summary, the highest year-end balance of the last five years and about three and a half months of its 2025 spending.
In her written report for the trustees’ Sept. 8 meeting, Fiscal Officer Michele Nowakowski said the police department’s spending authority for 2026 had been “very tightly set” and “may need to be increased later this year to meet the demands of this year’s rising costs and to add in the unbudgeted expense of the need earlier this year to outfit the Explorer and other vehicle repairs.”En su informe escrito para la reunión de los fideicomisarios del 8 de septiembre, la funcionaria fiscal Michele Nowakowski dijo que la autorización de gasto del departamento de policía para 2026 se había fijado “muy ajustada” y que “quizá haya que aumentarla más adelante este año” por el alza de los costos y por el gasto no presupuestado de equipar a principios de año una camioneta Explorer y otras reparaciones de vehículos.
How is the police department currently funded?¿Cómo se financia hoy el departamento de policía?
Voters have already approved seven police levies since 1983, the latest in 2009, and none of them ends. Together they total 16.05 mills, but Ohio’s tax-reduction rules, which keep a voted levy from growing as property values rise, cut what homeowners actually pay to about 7.94 mills: roughly $278 a year on a $100,000 home, according to the county auditor’s 2025 tax records. Because those levies are older, the state also knocks 10% off that bill, and another 2.5% for an owner-occupied home, bringing it to about $243; a new levy gets neither break. The new levy would add $114 a year, almost half again as much police tax for that homeowner. The existing levies are not on the ballot.
When does it end?¿Cuándo termina?
It does not. The ballot says it would run “for a continuing period of time,” with the first bills in 2027.No termina. La boleta dice que regiría “for a continuing period of time” (por tiempo indefinido), con los primeros cobros en 2027.
