Redd & The Paper Flowers play Toledo’s Main Library ThursdayRedd & The Paper Flowers tocan el jueves en Toledo

Redd & The Paper Flowers, a four-piece folk band from Knoxville, Tennessee, play a free show Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s Main Library, 325 Michigan St., as part of its Live at the Library series. The show is for all ages. The library takes registrations on its page for the show.

The band is Redd Daugherty on guitar, Gavin Gregg on mandolin, Katie Adams on upright bass and Colleen d’Alelio on cello, and all four sing. They call their sound “Living Room Folk.” Their new record, “Dead Little Thing,” comes out Friday, Oct. 23, the day after the Toledo show. Its single “Shower Thoughts” came out Sept. 30.

Daugherty runs Rush’s Music, a Knoxville instrument shop, which she inherited after its owner, Jason Cooper, died in 2023 at 46. Gitcha Records, which lists the band on its roster, says Cooper was a victim of gun violence and calls the record a look at “the fallout from the tragedy.”Daugherty dirige Rush’s Music, una tienda de instrumentos de Knoxville que heredó después de que su dueño, Jason Cooper, muriera en 2023 a los 46 años.

Daugherty answered the Lake Erie Inquiry’s questions by email for the band. The answers appear here as given, with some light editing.

You describe “Dead Little Thing” as a place where grief and love collide, sometimes absurdly. What’s a moment in making it when you laughed at something you thought you weren’t supposed to laugh at?Ustedes describen “Dead Little Thing” como un lugar donde el duelo y el amor chocan, a veces de forma absurda.

Yes! I love your phrasing of ‘Dead Little Thing’ as a ‘place where grief and love collide, sometimes absurdly.’ I think ‘Shower Thoughts’ perfectly answers this question. I was struggling to pay bills, take care of myself, take care of the band, and support Rush’s Music in the way it needed (it’s of course getting better and better each day, haha), but I was so over all the ‘things’ that after I stopped at Subway to get a tuna melt and I got back home to a barrage of needs from others, I chucked my sandwich directly in the garbage can outside at my house. And I’m sure I said a few choice words, too. I also halfway missed the trash can, so there was tuna all over the side of my house for about a week. I can think back on it now and laugh, but at the time, I was not okay, haha.¡Sí!

Is there a lyric on this record you nearly chickened out of putting into the world? What made you keep it?¿Hay alguna letra en este disco que casi no se atrevieron a sacar al mundo? ¿Por qué la dejaron?

Not really. I would argue the whole record almost didn’t ‘make it,’ because many of the songs are about a love that, at the time, was unrequited. It has since been resolved. As a Southern lady, born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, I have the unique duality of on one hand trying to approach everyone with sweetness and nurturing, but on the other hand possessing a deeply rooted ‘redneck’ sensibility to situations where it’s hard to keep my mouth shut on how I really feel about things.

Redd, you inherited Rush’s Music after losing a friend and mentor. Was there a moment when you realized the shop was changing you as a songwriter, not just as a person running a business?

I don’t think I’ve actually had time to slow down over the past three years to evaluate my songwriting. It’s a little embarrassing. I used to write much more than I do now; between running the store and being on tour about half the year, I’ve slowed down writing a bit. I think it’s just the nature of being ‘in between.’No creo que en los últimos tres años haya tenido tiempo de frenar y evaluar cómo compongo.

We had ‘Appalachian Bell Jar’ ready to go in 2023, but after Jason was murdered in February 2023, that was put on hold until 2025. I wrote ‘Dead Little Thing’ during the in-between time of 2023 and 2025. So, we’ve been playing these songs in tandem for a couple years, now.

Our next album, ‘Birdies,’ we’re currently writing, and it’s set to release sometime (fingers crossed) in 2027. I feel extremely supported that Katie, Colleen, and Gavin are writing on this record. We’ve each written two to three songs apiece, whereas before I wrote most of ‘Appalachian Bell Jar’ and all of ‘Dead Little Thing.’ I didn’t mean to become the main writer in our band, it just happened accidentally.

My dream is to share all aspects of composing and songwriting equally with Katie, Colleen, and Gavin. Every day we’re getting closer and closer to that.

What’s the biggest argument the band has had over a song, and who won? (Or is the argument still open?)¿Cuál ha sido la mayor discusión del grupo por una canción, y quién ganó? (¿O sigue abierta?)

Hmm. We don’t typically argue; it’s kind of wild. We’re super tight, and we’re best friends. I’m sure this might happen someday, and if it does, I can imagine Colleen and I would be the most fiery about it with her being a Leo and me being an Aries. With ‘Birdies,’ our upcoming 2027 record, there has been way more discussion regarding songs, but only because we all write and compose differently.Mmm.

I’m sorry we’re boring!¡Perdón por ser tan aburridos!

You’ve called your sound Living Room Folk. What’s something that works in a living room but becomes gloriously weird in a library atrium?

Hahaha. I love this question. Hmm.Jajaja. Me encanta esta pregunta. Mmm.

We’ve never played in a library atrium before, but something we’ve run up against in other spaces is the fifth member of our band, our microphone named Myrtle, has a personality all her own. She’s an Ear Trumpet Labs microphone.

She’s a condenser mic with a large pattern (so, big personality), and we can’t use monitors, and if she’s not far back enough from the speakers, she screams.

So, sometimes we have to play quieter than we anticipate because the room isn’t ‘friendly’ with its setup, BUT I wouldn’t change it any other way. We started playing on Myrtle in 2025, and she has completely changed our performance dynamic. We perform almost on top of each other and have to EQ ourselves; so, it looks more like a tight and close dance. We don’t plug any of our instruments in, aside from Katie’s bass, and Katie’s bass has the sister mic, named Nadine.

We all perform and sing through one mic.

What do people misunderstand about Appalachian music, or about the place you’re coming from?¿Qué es lo que la gente no entiende de la música apalache, o del lugar de donde vienen?

I think most people not from Appalachia, or the South, especially those that have never visited, assume we’re a bunch of barefoot, racist, conservative hicks. And while we may actually take advantage of being barefoot and a little hick-ish, there is a large movement of people in the South actively trying to turn our cities ‘blue.’ I also tried for a very long time to get rid of my accent, because people attributed my accent to mean I was uneducated. There are still stereotypes we’re trying to break.

I grew up amongst the opioid crisis, which is still ongoing in Appalachia, and resources are desperately lacking in the area.

When the Toledo audience walks out Thursday, what’s the one feeling you hope they carry home?

I love this question! I hope they carry a sense of belonging and coziness. I truly believe that the ‘magic’ that comes from the music we create and share is based on the love we have between each other in the band. Again, these are my best friends. They have seen me at my absolute rock bottom meaner-than-a-striped-snake eras, and they still choose to make music with me, show up as my best buds, and support our crazy dreams together. I am very lucky. And we are so lucky that we get to share our music with Toledo for the first time.¡Me encanta esta pregunta!
