The Lake Erie Inquiry

It’s always fun to listen back to the record because we play it live so often that some of the really intricate parts that were recorded are like Easter eggs when we listen back. Specifically Joanne Shaw Taylor’s guitar parts on the Intro track have been sticking out to us recently! And the trumpet: we don’t always get to play with horns, so it’s so fun to hear Emmanuel play them on the record!Siempre es divertido volver a escuchar el disco, porque lo tocamos en vivo tan seguido que algunas de las partes más minuciosas que se grabaron son como sorpresas escondidas cuando lo volvemos a oír. ¡En especial, las guitarras de Joanne Shaw Taylor en la pista de introducción nos han llamado mucho la atención últimamente! Most of the songs that are on our record and the ones we perform the most are cowritten by all three of us with a few small exceptions. ‘Don Juan,’ for example, was written by Jilian and a couple of her friends in Nashville; when we decided to record it, it was a tune that felt most suited for Grace to take lead on because it had a cool badass, take-no-BS kind of vibe that she is able to portray really well through her performance. Usually though, we figure out the arrangement of who is going to sing what as we write it; sometimes that changes, but in general if two of us feel strongly that the other should sing the part, or if someone feels strongly about wanting to sing a certain verse, that’s how we decide.La mayoría de las canciones del disco y de las que más tocamos en vivo las escribimos las tres juntas, con algunas pequeñas excepciones. ‘Don Juan’, por ejemplo, la escribieron Jilian y un par de amigos suyos en Nashville; cuando decidimos grabarla, sentimos que era la canción ideal para que Grace cantara la voz principal, porque tenía una onda ruda, de no aguantarle tonterías a nadie, que ella sabe transmitir muy bien en el escenario. Pero normalmente decidimos quién canta qué mientras la escribimos; a veces eso cambia, pero en general, si dos de nosotras sienten que la otra debería cantar una parte, o si alguna tiene muchas ganas de cantar cierta estrofa, así es como decidimos.

We were so lucky to have her be a part of this project! Our producer Amber Buist is a huge fan of hers and is also really great friends with her manager Sharon Corbitt. She asked Sharon if Joanne might be interested and the rest is history!¡Tuvimos muchísima suerte de que formara parte de este proyecto! I think we’d say ‘Rebel Eve.’ It’s our title track of the record, the name of our band, and also happens to be the first song that we all three co-wrote together. If you listen to that song, you’ll have a pretty good idea of who we are, what we stand for, and the style of music you can expect in our show.Creo que diríamos ‘Rebel Eve’. Es la canción que da título al disco, el nombre del grupo, y además resulta ser la primera canción que escribimos las tres juntas. Si escuchan esa canción, se harán una buena idea de quiénes somos, qué defendemos y el estilo de música que pueden esperar en el concierto.

We were playing a house show in Grand Haven one time and the power went out. It was one of those moments where we could decide it was gonna be a bad day or make a really cool moment out of it. We ended up playing the majority of the show acoustic (and then the power came back on!) but it was such a special show because everyone who was there just was so happy to be a part of it, and it also felt way more intimate and special. It also was a moment for us to remember how we started (acoustic, in our living room). Major inconveniences always have the potential to be magical!Una vez estábamos tocando en un concierto en una casa en Grand Haven y se fue la luz. Fue uno de esos momentos en que podíamos decidir que iba a ser un mal día o convertirlo en algo muy bonito. Terminamos tocando casi todo el concierto en acústico (¡y después volvió la luz!), pero fue un concierto muy especial, porque todos los que estaban ahí se sentían felices de ser parte de él, y además se sintió mucho más íntimo y especial. Katie grew up just down the road in Saline, so Ann Arbor definitely feels like a hometown show. Grace and Jil grew up only an hour and a half or so from there, so I’d definitely say it’s a really cool central spot; we love coming back to Ann Arbor.Katie creció aquí cerca, en Saline, así que Ann Arbor definitivamente se siente como tocar en casa. We are really excited to play Kerrytown on Thursday and are also really excited that we were just announced as an artist in next year’s Ann Arbor Folk Fest in January! We did our vinyl release at the Ark almost a year ago to the day, so it feels really special to be back in a city who has supported us every step of the way.¡Estamos muy emocionadas de tocar en Kerrytown el jueves, y también de que nos acaban de anunciar entre los artistas del Ann Arbor Folk Fest del próximo año, en enero!
