Eighty years of Geddis, and a president who is not oneOchenta años de Geddis, y un presidente que no lo es

Robert Geddis Sr. founded Geddis Brothers Paving in 1946 with one backhoe and one dump truck. The company incorporated thirty years later, in 1976, under the name it still carries, Geddis Paving & Excavating, Inc., and works out of 1019 Wamba Ave. in Toledo. It lays roads, moves earth, installs sanitary and storm sewer, and crushes on site, on jobs that run from a residential driveway to municipal, state and federal contracts.

When Robert Sr. died in 1985, his son Robert (Bob) Geddis left a job teaching elementary school and took the company over. He owns it now. Of his own son, Ben, who works in the business, Bob says: “Having a dad that worked so hard in the business but took the time to be a family man was huge to me. Espero habérselo pasado a mi hijo.”

What the company says about who comes next is the part that is not sentimental. Third-generation family members are in the business, but the president is Steve Oliver, who is not a Geddis, and the succession the company describes is to its own staff: Bob Geddis and Oliver say they are training the next generation with a focus on growing and elevating employees from within. “In five to ten years, the younger generation will be running the company. And I feel good about that,” Oliver says. Eighty years in, the family firm is planning to be run by people who did not inherit it.Lo que la empresa dice sobre quién sigue es la parte que no es sentimental.

A Vermilion farm market that opened in 1979 has closed indefinitely, with no reason givenUn mercado agrícola de Vermilion abierto desde 1979 cerró indefinidamente, sin dar una razón

Vermilion Farm Market, on Liberty Avenue at the east end of town, closed indefinitely on Sept. 9 after 47 years. The business posted the notice on its Facebook page and taped a matching one to the door: “We have decided to close indefinitely.” Neither the post nor the notice gave a reason or a reopening date, and the entrance has been locked since. Two calls placed by the Norwalk Reflector reached an automated greeting and then a voicemail box that had not been set up.Vermilion Farm Market, en Liberty Avenue en el extremo este del pueblo, cerró indefinidamente el 9 de septiembre después de 47 años.

Frank Schweinberg and his partner, Tom Rottel, opened the market in 1979, according to Schweinberg’s daughter, Wendy Baxter. She said her father spent more than 34 years there and retired in 2013, and that the market was sold to new owners as Rottel finished his time with the business. It sold fresh produce, meat and deli counters, baked goods and specialty groceries, and its website advertised regionally grown produce, Ohio maple syrup, Amish foods and handmade sausages.

“It had an atmosphere that treated you like family,” Baxter wrote, adding that she hoped it would reopen. Kathy Rothgery Hrivnak wrote that it was the first stop on her visits to Linwood Park. A former employee, who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation, said business had slowed noticeably as the market moved from summer to fall hours, praised the owner, and said the staff were paid for the hours they worked. ACC Adult Home Care of Vermilion invited the market’s employees to ask about its own openings. The closing notice ended: “To all our loyal customers for many years, thank you.

A sports bar takes the old Alleyway space on North ErieUn bar deportivo ocupa el antiguo local del Alleyway en North Erie

Mike Stancati, who runs Hannon’s Block and Hannon’s Garage Bar at Monroe and Erie streets downtown, is opening The Station Sports Bar at 28 N. Erie St. The space was the Alleyway, which opened in 2022 and closed in late 2024. Stancati said this month he was aiming for a mid-September debut. No opening date has been announced.

The kitchen is the part he talks about. Detroit-style and tavern-style pizzas come off a dough recipe he says has taken work, and the same dough becomes Philly cheesesteaks and Italian subs. There is a craft cocktail list.

The Yard, his beer garden and event space at 27 N. Huron St., across from Fifth Third Field, had its grand opening in August. It is open Fridays from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m., weather permitting, and takes private rentals. “There’s not a ton of real, true beer garden space in downtown Toledo,” Stancati said.

The fourth generation at Wixey Bakery came back from other careersLa cuarta generación de la Wixey Bakery volvió de otras carreras

Wixey Bakery opened in 1930 and is still owned by the family that opened it, four generations on, at 2017 Glendale Ave. in South Toledo.

Percy Wixey founded it. His son Maurice ran it second and Maurice’s son Dennis Wixey third. Denise Wixey-Coulter and Brian Wixey, Dennis’s children, own it now. Dennis still works three mornings a week. “He is a worker, not just a greeter,” Brian said.

Neither owner came to it young. Denise was a registered nurse for 17 years and describes her work at the bakery as “running the front of the house.” Brian cooked in restaurants in Washington before he came back to Toledo. The fourth generation is two people who had built other careers and left them.

The shop has stayed narrow. It opens Tuesday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closes Sunday and Monday. It makes no gluten-free goods and no pies outside the holidays. Doughnuts, cookies, kolachkes, muffins and decorated cakes are the list; plain raised doughnuts outsell everything, and an eclair batch takes six dozen eggs. The cases are empty before the doors close.

Snook’s Dream Cars is closing after nearly 25 yearsSnook’s Dream Cars cierra tras casi 25 años

Snook’s Dream Cars, at 13920 County Home Road in Bowling Green, just north of U.S. 6, is closing after almost 25 years. The museum’s own announcement is three sentences: “The museum is closing soon. After operating Snook’s Dream Cars automobile museum for almost 25 years, it’s time to move on to new adventures, and our cars need to find new homes.” No closing date has been set, and the place is still keeping its hours — 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, weekends by appointment — and asks that you call 419-353-8338 to confirm before coming. The collection was the late Bill Snook’s and is run by his son, Jeff Snook; the building is a recreated 1940s Texaco station with the cars set in period scenes, from a 1930s general store to a 1960s racetrack. Fifteen of the cars are for sale through Hagerty Marketplace, from a 1931 Ford Model A station wagon to a 1971 Datsun 240Z.Snook’s Dream Cars, en el 13920 de County Home Road, en Bowling Green, justo al norte de la U.S. 6, cierra tras casi 25 años.

Gross Electric has been selling light in Toledo since 1910, when George J. Gross, called Joe, took over a branch store of the Peerless Light Co. and put his own name on it. The company is 116 years old this year and still in the family: Joe’s son Richard ran it after him, and Richard’s daughter Laurie Gross is president today, with her brother Joe Gross as vice president.

The unsentimental part is the footprint. A lighting showroom is exactly the kind of business the last twenty years were supposed to end, and Gross Electric now runs five of them: Toledo at 2807 N. Reynolds Rd., Northwood, and three in Michigan — Ann Arbor, Howell and Elk Rapids. It calls itself the oldest independent family-owned electrical and lighting distributor in the area, and no one has stepped forward to dispute it.La parte nada sentimental es la huella.

The Chuck E. Cheese at 5455 Airport Hwy. in south Toledo served its last pizza on Monday, Aug. 31. It opened in 1993 and ran for 33 years. The company said the lease was expiring.

The animatronic band went with it. The chain has been pulling the robot musicians out of its dining rooms for years, and the Airport Highway store still had a full stage, which is why a change.org petition to save it collected signatures from people who had not been inside in a decade. Whether it was the last store in the country with the original set-up is a claim this paper has not been able to settle with the company.

The chain still has a Toledo store. The 5077 Monroe St. location, which opened the same year, is open and still trading.

Schmucker’s has been selling Nola’s pies on North Reynolds since 1948Schmucker’s lleva vendiendo las tartas de Nola en North Reynolds desde 1948

Harvey and Nola Schmucker opened Schmucker’s Dairy Bar at 2103 N. Reynolds Rd. in 1948, selling ice cream and the pies Nola baked. It is a full restaurant now — hand-peeled potatoes, soups, gravy off slow-roasted beef broth — and the pies are still what it is known for. Their son Allen made it his life’s work alongside his wife, Alice. Their children Tim, Doug and Judy worked the place through high school, and Doug took over as general manager after Allen died. That is the third generation on the same corner, 78 years in. Harvey’s rule, which the restaurant still prints, was “Good Food, at a Reasonable Price,” and that nobody should “Go Away Hungry.”Harvey y Nola Schmucker abrieron el Schmucker’s Dairy Bar en el 2103 de N. Reynolds Rd. en 1948, con helados y las tartas que horneaba Nola.
