Toledo museum redesign makes room for art—and a restEl museo de Toledo abre espacio para arte y descanso

The Toledo Museum of Art’s main galleries are due to reopen in fall 2027 with more room for its collection—and a different way to move through it. Plans call for reopened doorways, a glass-history display and a quiet gallery where visitors can sit and look outside.

Deputy Director Andrea Gardner and architect Michael Maltzan described the changes at a September town hall, posted online Sept. 17. The work combines new displays with replacement of aging heating and cooling equipment, so the collection will not have to be moved twice, Gardner said.

More art, fewer dead endsMás arte y nuevas rutas

Space that had become storage will return to gallery use. Canaday, formerly a special-exhibition gallery, will trace the history of glass. Ancient glass will also return to Classic Court. The trade-off is less space for temporary exhibitions: one major gallery instead of two.

Reopening blocked doorways will restore a loop through the building. Longer views between rooms will help visitors see connections among works from different places and periods. The French period room, the Château de Chenailles, is also set to return after more than a decade off view.

A place to pause—and watch conservators workUn lugar para descansar y observar la conservación

The former Gothic Hall will become a quieter space with fewer works, more seats and reopened windows. Near Libbey Court, a window into a new conservation lab will let visitors watch the care of artworks in the old gift-shop space.

Other changes include more gallery-floor restrooms, an accessible north entrance with a shorter route toward the Glass Pavilion, and rooms for nursing, quiet reflection and visitors with sensory needs.

Open now: The Glass Pavilion, education wing, library and sculpture garden. Admission and parking are free. The main galleries remain closed. The flower is already here. A broad, rippled mouth opens in green, gold and violet above a slim, dark stem. Tiffany’s blown glass turns a vase into something that seems to be blooming—even before anyone adds a flower.
