This dairy’s bottle washer has been running since 1946La lavadora de botellas de esta lechería funciona desde 1946

Calder Dairy still washes its bottles in the machine it installed the year it opened. The dairy at 1020 Southfield Rd. in Lincoln Park, Mich., says on its own account of how the milk is made that the washer is the original and is still in good working order, and jokes that it is older than the one in the Henry Ford museum. That is 80 years in business, and the machine is the oldest thing in it.Calder Dairy todavía lava sus botellas en la máquina que instaló el año en que abrió.

William Graham Stewart Calder started it in 1946 with his Air Force bonus check, which bought a 12-year-old used laundry truck. The first day’s sales came to $17.88. The herd came later and by accident: the family bought a farm in Carleton, Mich., meaning it for weekends and retirement, then bought one Brown Swiss cow to keep the grass down. She had a calf. The company now milks 180 cows and says the farm supplies most of what it bottles, not all of it.William Graham Stewart Calder la fundó en 1946 con su bono de la Fuerza Aérea, que pagó un camión de lavandería usado de 12 años.

Milk from the farm rides to Lincoln Park in the company’s own tanker, goes into a refrigerated bulk tank and is processed in small batches. The company vat pasteurizes it, holding it at 150 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes rather than flashing it hotter and faster.

The trucks still come to the door. Calder runs home-delivery routes in Monroe, Wayne and Washtenaw counties and in the southwestern corner of Oakland County, which it limits to South Lyon and New Hudson. A customer sets a standing weekly order, is billed monthly with the dairy’s newsletter on the back of the bill, and pays a $3.75 surcharge for the service. A change to this week’s order can go through the portal, or by telephone a day ahead, or by leaving a note for the driver.

The founder died in 2011 at 94. The company says the family still oversees the dairy and the farm, and names nobody. Besides the dairy and the farm store in Carleton there is a third counter, at 28190 Telegraph Rd. in Flat Rock, Mich.

The last Sign of the Beefcarver closed SundayCerró el último Sign of the Beefcarver en Royal Oak

Sign of the Beefcarver, the cafeteria line at 27400 Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak, Mich., served its last meal on Sunday, Oct. 25, and its own Facebook page then posted a single word: “Closed.” The owners had announced the date five days earlier, calling it “the last Sign of the Beefcarver restaurant” and the end of “70 years of continuous family-run operation.”

Rising food costs were the reason the owners gave, and losses they said they could no longer sustain; they also blamed the pandemic shutdown and government policy. They spent much of the announcement on the staff, asking customers to tip them and employers to hire them, and urging business owners to approach the workers directly. The announcement gives no number of employees and says nothing about what becomes of the building.
