Claudio Coello, Spanish, 1642 to 1693: Saint Joseph and the Christ Child, oil on canvas, painted in 1666, when he was 24. The thing to look at is the top of the canvas. Both upper corners are dark and flat where the rest of the picture is not, and the paint runs out along a curve between them. The label says the canvas was made for an arched frame, probably for a church, and the corners are the part nobody was meant to see. The wall label credits the purchase to the Libbey Endowment, the money Edward Drummond Libbey left the museum he founded in 1901 out of a glassmaking fortune. The gallery label says to look for the three small pointed locks along the hairline, which is what tells the two men apart in marble. Yayoi Kusama died on Aug. 14 at a hospital in Tokyo, aged 97, and Toledo had her for one winter. Fireflies on the Water, the mirrored room the Whitney Museum of American Art sent out on loan, stood in the museum from Dec. 14, 2019 to Apr. 26, 2020 — the first Infinity Room the museum ever hung, and people queued in the cold for their sixty seconds alone inside it. This pumpkin is from that same winter and the other end of the building. It is not in the collection; it was in the museum store, and the card in the case reads Pillow. The design is Kusama’s and the object is licensed, which is why the card is the interesting part: the Tate calls the same sort of thing a soft sculpture and asks £350 for it, and so does the MoMA Design Store. Toledo calls it a pillow and asks $285. Kusama spent sixty years insisting the dots should cover everything and never stop, and it worked well enough that three museums cannot agree on whether the thing in the case is furniture.Esta calabaza es de ese mismo invierno y del otro extremo del edificio.
