Ninety years ago this fall the Toledo Zoo was in the middle of the six years that built most of what a visitor still walks through. Between 1934 and 1939 the federal Works Progress Administration put up five buildings on the grounds: the Reptile House in 1934, the Amphitheatre in 1936, the Aviary in 1937, the Museum of Science in 1938 and the Aquarium in 1939.Hace noventa años, en un otoño como este, el Toledo Zoo estaba en mitad de los seis años que levantaron casi todo lo que un visitante sigue recorriendo. A stone carver named Arthur Cox cut the limestone animals that were set around the grounds in the middle of that decade. Classes first met in Bowling Green, Ohio, 112 years ago this fall. What was then Bowling Green State Normal College opened in 1914 with 304 students and a faculty of 21. The first two buildings on the campus, the Administration Building and North Dormitory, were not ready until 1915. The school was created by a 1910 law that called for two normal schools in northern Ohio, one at Kent and one at Bowling Green, and it was named Bowling Green Normal School on Feb. 16, 1912. In 1911 the General Assembly appropriated $150,000 for the two buildings, about $4.8 million in 2023 dollars. The college awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in education in 1917. The Ohio legislature did not authorize it to grant four-year degrees until 1929, by which time it had granted 253 of them. That same year the name changed to Bowling Green State College, and the campus had grown to 105 acres, seven college buildings, a heating plant, a president’s house, a small group of farm buildings and more than 900 students. On Sept. 10, 1813, nine American vessels under Oliver Hazard Perry met six British ships under Robert Heriot Barclay in the open lake west of the Bass Islands, in sight of the harbor where Perry had anchored. Perry’s flagship, the Lawrence, was shot to pieces in the first two hours; he rowed to the Niagara under fire, brought her through the British line, and forced the surrender of every British ship. The lake changed hands with the battle. Within a month Harrison’s army crossed from the Maumee to retake Detroit and beat the British and Tecumseh’s confederacy at the Thames, and the frontier that became northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan was never fought over again. The memorial at Put-in-Bay, a 352-foot Doric column of pink granite built between 1912 and 1915, marks the peace as much as the victory; three American and three British officers killed in the battle lie together beneath its floor. On Sept. 6, 1901, President William McKinley was shaking hands with the public at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo when Leon Czolgosz, a 28-year-old anarchist, fired twice into his chest.
