About three and a half hours south of Toledo, on State Route 73 outside Peebles, a snake with a curled tail lies along a ridge in Adams County. What nobody can tell you is when it was built. The state’s own account runs through three answers. Later archaeologists attributed the effigy to the Adena culture, which dates from 800 B.C. to A.D. 100. A 1991 excavation pointed instead to the Fort Ancient culture, A.D. 1000 to 1500, which would make the mound something like a thousand years younger. A 2014 team went back to the Adena and proposed a date of around 300 B.C. The sign on the grounds does not hedge. The Ohio Historical Marker there, put up in 2003 by the Ohio Bicentennial Commission and the Ohio Historical Society, says the earthwork was “Built on a spur of rock overlooking Ohio Brush Creek around 1000 A.D. by the Fort Ancient culture.” That is one of the three answers, cast in bronze, standing on ground kept by the same organization — renamed the Ohio History Connection — whose website now says the question is not settled.El letrero en el terreno no matiza. Part of what makes the question hard is standing next to it. Three burial mounds sit near the effigy: two of them Adena, one of them Fort Ancient. Two thousand years ago, on the ground that is now Newark, Ohio, people of the Hopewell culture raised earthen walls across about 3,000 acres — a great circle, a square, an octagon joined to a smaller circle, and walled avenues running between them. Less than a tenth of it survives. The two pieces that do, the Great Circle in Heath and the Octagon on the north side of Newark, were inscribed in September 2023 as part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, Ohio’s first World Heritage site. The Octagon is the one worth the drive this fall, and the reason is not the mounds. From 1910 the Octagon was the Moundbuilders Country Club’s golf course. The greens sat inside the walls, and the walls were the hazards. The Ohio History Connection has owned the land since 1933 and spent more than a decade trying to end a lease that ran to 2078. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled on Dec. 7, 2022, that the society could take the lease by eminent domain, and in August 2024 the two sides settled for a sum neither has disclosed. The club left on Jan. 1, 2025. What you find now, a year and a half on, is a landscape halfway between two uses. The greens are gone. Weeds come up in the old sand traps, and cart paths run off and stop where a hole used to be. The clubhouse is becoming the visitor center, with the bar turned into a small bookshop. The society says the tee boxes and bunkers will be gone within ten years, the pool will be demolished, and the tall trees inside the walls will not be replaced as they die, because the evidence says this was prairie when it was built. “We want to restore a place to its period of greatest cultural significance,” Jennifer Aultman, the History Connection’s chief director of historic sites, told WOSU last September.Lo que se encuentra ahora, año y medio después, es un paisaje a medio camino entre dos usos. The walls are also an instrument. In 1982 two Earlham College professors, Ray Hively and Robert Horn, showed that the axis running from the small circle through the octagon points at the place on the horizon where the moon rises at the northern limit of an 18.6-year cycle, and that four of the octagon’s eight walls mark the cycle’s other turning points. An analysis the History Connection later published ran more than ten billion random octagons through a computer and put the odds of that happening by accident somewhere between one in a thousand and one in 40 million. The cycle is at its northern extreme now. On Wednesday, Nov. 25, the society holds what it calls the last public moonrise of this cycle at the Octagon: activities from 5:30 p.m., the walk into the center of the circle at 6:30, moonrise through the avenue at 6:50. Free. Miss it and the moon takes 18.6 years to come back around.Los muros son también un instrumento. In 1836 a New York land speculator named Oshea Wilder laid out a town at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River and called it Singapore, meaning it to rival Chicago. It had two sawmills and shipped lumber out across Lake Michigan. When Chicago burned in 1871 — and Holland and Peshtigo and Manistee burned the same terrible autumn — the country needed boards, and the forest around Singapore was cut down to supply them. Nothing was left to hold the sand. What stands up the river is Saugatuck, which spent the century after the lumber left turning into an art town and then a resort. The Ox-Bow School of Art has run there since 1910, tied to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
