The Ark bills the Trail Blazers as a bluegrass-rooted group of Ann Arbor players who accompany her for this show; Pleuss describes the group on stage as mandolin, guitar, violin and bass. The song she picked for this piece, “Blue Heron,” is from “The Rest of You,” a six-song EP released May 1.The Ark presenta a los Trail Blazers como un grupo de músicos de Ann Arbor con raíces en el bluegrass que la acompañan en este concierto; Pleuss describe al grupo en el escenario como mandolina, guitarra, violín y bajo. La canción que eligió para esta nota, “Blue Heron”, es del EP de seis canciones “The Rest of You”, publicado el 1 de mayo.

Pleuss answered the Lake Erie Inquiry’s questions by email. Her answers appear here as she gave them, with some light editing.

What are you most eager to put in front of the Ark audience on Nov. 1?¿Qué es lo que más quiere mostrarle al público de The Ark el 1 de noviembre?

I can’t wait to share some emotive original songs and interesting takes on covers like ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ by Radiohead and ‘Don’t You Want Me’ by The Human League.Tengo muchas ganas de compartir algunas canciones originales emotivas y versiones interesantes de canciones como ‘Fake Plastic Trees’, de Radiohead, y ‘Don’t You Want Me’, de The Human League.

We are a group of mandolin, guitar, violin, and bass players, which would prompt most people to think we’ll be playing standard roots or bluegrass, but we wanted to push ourselves and dive into some personal favorites.

You work in both poetry and songs. How do you know when a line belongs on a page and when it needs a melody?

I find that I allow my poetry to be a bit more freeform, transcending multiple ideas and feelings, whereas I typically write songs with a specific theme in mind.

As much as my songs might feel poetic at times, there’s still a structure. Poetry allows me to dive deeper into the mystic, as Van Morrison would say.

Your press kit highlights “If You Saw Me Now.” What moment or image opened that song for you?Su kit de prensa destaca “If You Saw Me Now”. ¿Qué momento o imagen le abrió esa canción?

I lost a friend years ago to a drug overdose. Before I wrote this song, I was wishing I could call him to tell him how I was royally getting in my own way with relationships.

It’s a song about learning to feel it all, even in moments of grief.

What does your guitar playing express when the lyric stops?¿Qué expresa su guitarra cuando la letra se detiene?

I like to think the guitar is an extension of my emotional energy. Sometimes words don’t do a feeling justice. Sometimes you just need to carry the melody so someone else can feel it, too.

What’s an ordinary detail of life in Ann Arbor that has made it into your writing?¿Qué detalle cotidiano de la vida en Ann Arbor ha llegado a lo que escribe?

Community! Most Ann Arborites I know are deeply committed to their community and neighbors.¡La comunidad!

That unconditional love for one another is especially important at this moment in time, and it’s certainly present in my recent songs.

Sharing the bill with The Pontiac Trail Blazers, how are you thinking about the shape and sound of your own set?

We’re playing together for this set, and we’re really focused on our vocal harmonies and instrumental balance.

Traditionally, when we sing together, we only use one mic. It keeps the songs intimate and forces you to really listen to one another.

This set will ebb and flow between fun songs and sad songs. Though, even the sad songs are fun for us.Este set irá y vendrá entre canciones alegres y canciones tristes.
