The short versionLa versión corta
This paper has no database of readers. The site runs as a single Cloudflare Worker. Besides the folder of pages it serves, it is attached to one storage bucket, and that bucket holds the paper's photographs, videos and audio readings and nothing about you. There is no key-value store and no database, so there is nowhere to put a record of you even if the desk wanted one. The cookies it sets live in your browser, and the ones that let you in are self-verifying signed tokens: the site checks the signature and lets you in without looking anything up. The paper does not hold a list of who is reading it. The one list that exists is the mailing list, and it is kept at Buttondown (below).Este periódico no tiene base de datos de lectores. Set once Buttondown confirms that you own the address you gave, or when you open a link from the email edition. It holds a random identifier and a signature. Your address is not in it — the identifier is sixteen random bytes, not your email, and it cannot be turned back into your email by us or by anyone who reads it. This is the one cookie that holds your address, and it holds it encrypted with a key only this site has, so that the site can ask Buttondown whether you have confirmed — while you wait and on your next visit. Anyone who looks at the cookie in your browser sees scrambled text, not the address. Google Analytics runs on every page. With each page you open it sends Google: the page's address and title, the page you came from, your browser, device, screen size and language, and a rough location that Google works out from your IP address (Google receives the IP address with the request; it says Analytics does not store it). Google's standard measurement can also record how far you scroll and which links out of the site you click. On top of that, this paper sends Google a short list of its own events: the sign-up box being shown, opened or sent; the support page being opened and a checkout being started; the Listen button being played; a video being shared; the night-mode switch; the site being added to a home screen; and a page that was not found. Your email address and your name are never sent to Google. The one thing you type that can reach it is a search, because the search words sit in the page address (see Searching).Google Analytics funciona en cada página. Cloudflare's own analytics count page views without setting a cookie. This desk uses both for one thing: deciding which sections are worth the hours. A section nobody opens is hours that should have gone somewhere else. A blocker you run works too, because a blocked script does not run. When you search the archive, your browser downloads the index and does the searching itself. Your search terms go into the page address — /search.html?q=the words you typed — and the page address is exactly what a measurement tool records. So although the searching never reaches us, the words can still reach Google Analytics as part of the address of the page you were on. If that matters to you, switch the tag off before you search. This site installs a small service worker so an edition you have already opened still reads when your signal drops. That cache lives on your device and is never sent anywhere. A few small notes are also kept in your browser's own storage and never sent to us: the opt-out flag above; a mark that you have already signed up, and one that you closed the sign-up box, so it stops asking; whether you chose night mode; the town you picked on the front page; your filters on What's On; that you dismissed the offer to add the site to your home screen; and where you stopped listening to an edition's reading, so Listen picks up there. The list is run by Buttondown. What is sent there is your address, your IP address (Buttondown uses it to screen out fake sign-ups) and a label saying which door you signed up through. Nothing else about you goes. It is double opt-in: an address does nothing until somebody confirms it from that inbox, which is what stops a stranger from putting your address on a list you never asked for. Every email carries an unsubscribe link that works, and unsubscribing is the end of it.La lista la lleva Buttondown. Stripe takes the payment on Stripe's own checkout. This site has no database; it could not store a card number if it tried. What this paper sends Stripe to open a checkout is the amount, the name of the thing being paid for, and — only if you ticked the box asking to be credited — the display name you typed for the sponsors wall. Google receives the analytics described above, and nothing else: every typeface on this site, in every edition, is served by this site, not by Google. Buttondown holds the mailing list and sends the email through its own mail carrier, Postmark. Stripe takes the payments. This paper uses YouTube API Services for one thing: its own publishing tool uploads each day's short video to the paper's own YouTube channel, with a link back to the story. That tool signs in only to the paper's channel. It does not read, collect or store anything about you or any other YouTube account, and nobody outside the paper signs in to it. Watching the paper's videos on YouTube is governed by the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. If a court or an agency demands reader information, the honest answer is that there is almost nothing to give: no reading history, no list of pass holders, no search log. The mailing list at Buttondown and the payment records at Stripe exist and could be demanded of those companies.
