Whirlpool will raise appliance prices 7% as its sales fallWhirlpool subirá 7% los precios mientras caen sus ventas

Replacing a washer could cost more. Whirlpool told investors on Monday that it has announced a 7% price increase in its North American major-appliance business, “effective in Q4”, in the same release that reported a quarterly loss and an 8.3% drop in that business’s sales.

North American major-appliance sales came to $2.5 billion for the quarter, down from $2.7 billion a year earlier. Across the whole company, sales fell 8.8% to $3.7 billion.

Whirlpool also reported a loss of $249 million available to its common shareholders, against a profit of $73 million in the same quarter last year. The three figures are three different scopes. The loss is the one struck after $12 million of dividends on the company’s mandatory convertible preferred stock.

Northwest Ohio has a second stake in the company, which is one of the region’s large employers. Whirlpool put employment at its Clyde washing-machine plant at approximately 2,600 people in an announcement in August, and said a parts and subassembly plant then under construction in Perrysburg would employ up to 150 people, which is a plan and not a payroll. Monday’s release names no Ohio or Michigan site. It mentions workforce reduction plans in the United States and globally without naming a location, and one plant closing, in Apodaca, Mexico.

Dakkota Integrated Systems will close its plant at 5905 Van Dyke St. in Detroit and cut 397 jobs on Dec. 31, according to a notice the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity posted last week. The reason the company gave the state was reduced business.

Public money helped build the plant, and the state said at the time what it was buying. Michigan announced in January 2020 that Dakkota would put up to $45 million into a 300,000-square-foot plant on part of the former Kettering High School and Rose Elementary School sites “and create 400 jobs.”El dinero público ayudó a construir la planta, y el estado dijo entonces qué estaba comprando.

The company got a $1.5 million Michigan Business Development Program grant and 15 years in a Renaissance Zone the state valued at about $3.5 million. The transportation department committed $832,939 for road work and Detroit matched $268,018 of it. The city added an industrial property tax abatement and street and utility vacations. The announcement sets out no job milestone and no clawback.

The 400 was the state’s projection and the 397 is the state’s closure count, six years apart, and the notice does not say whether the same jobs are meant. The notice gives one site, one date, one count and one reason, and nothing else about the closing is in it. Since 2025 the state posts its own retyping of an employer’s letter rather than the letter, so every figure here is the state’s. Accounts elsewhere say the plant built instrument panels and that the closing comes in two stages; none of that is in the record. No company statement was found.

ASICS commits $25 million to study running in Ann ArborASICS pagará $25 millones por investigar en Ann Arbor

How animals run across loose, uneven ground, and how the cuts of kirigami might make a lighter shoe, are two of six research projects ASICS is paying the University of Michigan to pursue. The Japanese shoemaker announced on Monday, Oct. 26, that its AMSI Lab had opened on the university’s Ann Arbor campus, its first research laboratory run with a university. Talia Moore’s EMBiR Lab has the animals; Max Shtein’s Smart Materials Lab has the paper-cutting.

The company has committed $25 million and does not say over how long. It expects the work to begin informing its running and performance products by 2028, which is an aim and not a result.
