The month and the seasonEl mes y la estación
November’s first two days averaged 57.5° against a normal 48.3°, 9.2° warm, with a trace of rain against a normal 0.17 of an inch. Two days is two days, and a month that starts 9.2° warm has not yet said anything about the month.
The autumn since Sept. 1 is the steadier number: 62.5° against a normal 60.0°, 2.5° warm, with 5.10 inches of rain against a normal 5.69.El otoño desde el 1 de septiembre es la cifra más estable: 62.5° frente a una normal de 60.0°, 2.5° de más, con 5.10 pulgadas de lluvia frente a una normal de 5.69.

These are statewide percentages, not estimates for northwest Ohio or southeast Michigan. And a share of acres finished says nothing about yield or price.

Michigan is offering schools grants of up to $100,000 to cook more meals from scratch with food grown in the state. A district that wants one must file a letter of intent with the state agriculture department by 11:59 p.m.
The money is for the kitchen, not the menu. It buys gear to cut up local fruit and vegetables, to blend sauces, soups and batters, and to cook vegetables, grains and meat in batches. It can also pay staff to run the program. Software that helps a district buy local food counts too.
It is open to Michigan school districts and other local education agencies that already buy and serve local farm goods. A webinar is set for 1 p.m. Eastern on Nov. 10. Districts invited on from the letter stage file a full application by Jan. 22, 2027. The department says it will name the winners in March.
The pilot sits inside the state’s Farm to Family Program, and was funded in the 2027 state budget signed in July. The department does not say how much the pilot holds in all, or how many grants it will make.

On the harvest calendar the Toledo Farmers’ Market hands out, 40 crops have a season drawn as a bar. Turnips reach a little way into November.
That is the week’s service in one line: this is the stretch when the stand that still has squash is the stand that still has anything. The pick is butternut, the variety that keeps longest and peels easiest of the common four.

The downtown market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through April, at 525 Market St. From May to October it runs 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The next Saturday is Nov. 7.El mercado del centro abre los sábados de 9 a.m. a 1 p.m. hasta abril, en el 525 de la calle Market. This paper is reporting a calendar and a set of hours, not a promise about any one grower’s table. No vendor has told us what will be on it, and no price is quoted here.
Why it keepsPor qué se conserva
A winter squash is picked hard and cured, and its thick rind is the reason the bar runs long. Kept somewhere cool and dry, a back room rather than the refrigerator, a sound butternut will hold into the spring. That is the argument for buying more than one now, and it is an argument the calendar is making.
