A UToledo chemist wins nearly $2 million for safer opioidsUToledo: $2 millones para buscar opioides más seguros

A University of Toledo chemist has won nearly $2 million in federal money to chase safer opioids. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences gave Michael C. Young, an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, a five-year award to work on the carbon-hydrogen bonds that hold organic molecules together.

Young’s aim is a method for reaching any carbon-hydrogen bond in a molecule and adding something there, which he describes as adding a handle where nature did not leave one. The same methods would not be limited to painkillers. One use he names is naloxone, the drug that reverses an overdose: made in fewer steps, he says, it would cost less to manufacture. The award is to support at least two undergraduates, four graduate students and a postdoctoral researcher in his Wolfe Hall lab.

This is money for work not yet done; the university describes it as foundational chemistry. The announcement gives neither an award number nor a published study. The federal record, NIH project 1R35GM165588-01, carries a first-year award of $380,870 and a project period running to April 2031, and no five-year total, so the “nearly $2 million” is the university’s figure.
