Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School, which has taught ninth through twelfth grade on a 20-acre campus in Oregon since 1961, will close at the end of December, its officials announced Thursday. The pre-K-through-eighth-grade school on the same campus, Kateri Catholic Academy, will stay open.

The announcement came in a letter and an online video from Principal Malinda Siers and the Rev. Scott Woods, chairman of the school’s board of limited jurisdiction. The board of directors recommended the closing to Bishop Daniel Thomas, who approved it. “Unfortunately, it has become clear, that there is no longer a viable pathway for our high school,” Siers said in the video.

Why December and not MayPor qué diciembre y no mayo

The closing falls in the middle of the school year, five months before this year’s seniors would have graduated, and that is the complaint the school’s own community made loudest on Thursday. Asked about it, the Diocese of Toledo said the alternative was worse. Keeping the high school open through May was “clearly not sustainable from a financial perspective,” Kelly Donaghy, the diocese’s senior director of communications, told The Blade. “To keep secondary students through May, significant staffing and programming reductions would have resulted in the elimination of all forms of student life, including campus ministry and athletics.”

One form of student life had already gone. The school canceled its 2026 eight-man football season on July 28 for lack of players and parent volunteers, its third canceled season in five years, after 2022 and 2024 at eleven-man. It went 0-10 in 2025, and Plymouth took its place in the Northern 8 conference.

What 69 students looks like against 265Cómo se ven 69 estudiantes frente a 265

In September 2013, two years into a bet on a science, technology, engineering, math and medicine curriculum, the school counted 265 students and described itself as at about 90% of capacity. Tuition then was $8,350, a third of its students were not Catholic, and 82 students across the high school and the academy were on vouchers.

The state’s own enrollment reports put a middle point on the line. The Ohio High School Athletic Association assigns schools to tournament divisions using the enrollment figures nonpublic schools file with the state for grades 9, 10 and 11. Its 2026-27 basketball division files, which this paper read, list Cardinal Stritch Catholic at 45 boys and 39 girls, or 84 students in three grades as of the October 2025 report. The school now says 69 in all four. That is roughly a quarter of what it taught thirteen years ago.

The school’s published 2026-27 high school price is $10,970 in tuition plus a $1,750 composite fee and a $250 deposit, or $12,970 for the year. Ohio’s EdChoice scholarship covers up to $8,408 of a high school bill, leaving about $4,562 to a family that qualifies for the full amount.

What families who have already paid for a full year get back for a spring semester the school will not hold is not addressed anywhere the school has published. Its tuition page says tuition and fees are refundable only if a student withdraws before attending. The school and the diocese have not said, and this paper has not yet asked.

The letter directs students to Central Catholic High School in Toledo to continue in January “should they choose,” and promises each family individual help wherever it lands. Central Catholic declined on Thursday afternoon to say how it would take on sixty-odd additional students mid-year. Oregon’s public high school, Clay, is the other option inside the district the campus sits in; it has not said publicly what it will tell families who want to enroll in January.

The high school wing is not going anywhere soon, because the academy is staying. The Lucas County Auditor’s record for the parcel at 3225 Pickle Rd., which this paper read on Thursday, describes 20 acres and a school building put up in 1961 with 102,535 square feet of floor space, appraised at $9.17 million, of which $8.4 million is the building and $767,600 the land. The land is zoned R-2, medium-density residential. As a private school it pays no property tax.

The owner of record is not the diocese but three priests acting as trustees, the Rev. Msgr. William J. Kubacki and the Revs. Monte J. Hoyles and Dennis Walsh, under a deed transferring the property for no money on April 13, 2022. The deed they took it from still carried the name of Leonard P. Blair as Bishop of Toledo; Bishop Blair left Toledo in 2013. Whom the trustees hold the campus for, and what becomes of the high school wing once the high school is gone, the diocese has not said.

Bishop George J. Rehring broke ground in Oregon on Sept. 21, 1960, on what would be Toledo’s sixth Catholic high school. The first ninth-grade class arrived in the fall of 1961. The school is named for Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Toledo’s second bishop from 1921 to 1930 and later archbishop of Chicago. In May 2011, at its 50th anniversary, it added “Catholic” to its name. Kateri Catholic Academy, formed from merged parish schools in 2009, shares the campus, making the site a rare pre-K-through-12 Catholic campus in the region.

Its best-known graduate is Bryan Smolinski, who grew up in Genoa, went from Stritch to Michigan State and played 1,056 games in the National Hockey League for eight teams, scoring 651 points.

The letter said the rumors about the school’s closing had circulated “for literally decades,” that an Early College Pathways program and “a valiant marketing campaign” had been tried. It thanked the faculty and staff and acknowledged their “many questions and concerns.” How many of them lose their jobs, and when, is not stated.
