VILLAGE GOVERNMENT · MONROEVILLE · HURON COUNTYGOBIERNO DEL PUEBLO · MONROEVILLE · CONDADO DE HURON

Sean Crosby quit Saturday, a month in, after the village began reviewing his appointment, the Sandusky Register reported. Council opens its Tuesday meeting in closed session. Sean Crosby, who started as Monroeville’s village administrator Sept. 9, resigned Saturday, Mayor Joe Galea told the Sandusky Register, which reported last week that the village was reviewing his appointment after residents raised concerns about his background. As of Monday, neither the village nor the Register had said what the concerns were, and Galea gave no reason for the resignation.

Galea told the Register that Crosby underwent a standard background check and an additional review before he was appointed. He did not say whether the resignation had anything to do with the village’s review, and the Register reported it is unclear whether that review is over. “The village of Monroeville is committed to ensuring that all employees and administrators are individuals in whom our residents can place their trust and confidence,” he said last week.

Council approved Crosby’s appointment Sept. 1 after a closed session, “contingent on completion of any pre-employment testing needed,” and on Sept. 8 set his pay at $32 an hour, starting Sept. 9, the village’s draft minutes show. In June he had been with the village about a year and a half, as a laborer in the street department. When Administrator Tom Gray announced his retirement in June, Galea said he was concerned that appointing Crosby, who had submitted a résumé, would mean leapfrogging other employees, the minutes say, and a council committee interviewed three candidates in July without deciding.

Under Ohio law, the mayor appoints a village administrator, who takes office only with the approval of a majority of council and serves at the pleasure of both. The job runs the village’s utilities and the upkeep of its streets, sewers and other public works, the statute says.

Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday and opens with a closed session on “the appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion, or compensation of a public employee or official,” its agenda says. The meeting is in council chambers at 21 N. Main St. The agenda, posted before the resignation, still lists a report from the village administrator, and it sets aside time for the public to address council. The village had not said by Monday who is doing the administrator’s job; its administration page now lists the post as vacant.
