Lake St. Clair is worth $2.2 billion a year and has nowhere to sleep. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel told the county chamber's Great Lakes Policy Conference that the lake draws 17 million visitors annually and supports more than 1,000 businesses and 60-plus marinas — with no waterfront lodging to hold any of them overnight. He said talks continue about "possibly how do we get some type of hotel convention center out on Lake St. Clair," alongside $15 million in renovations planned for Lake St. Clair Metropark. The idea is old: county parks hired a consultant in 2024 after a blue-economy study found the Macomb coast "scored really high at every level except for lodging." No site, developer or price tag.

Greektown's $20 million streetscape is nearly done, and the restaurants that survived it want the cars kept out. The Monroe Street project reopened its first block in July, finished a second this month, and should wrap by mid-November. Yanni Dionisopoulos, co-owner of Golden Fleece — the district's longest-operating restaurant — said business fell roughly 50 percent during construction and is recovering: "If it's working with no cars, then why mess with it?" Ayesha Maxwell, the neighborhood partnership's executive director since November, said the group will survey the public through spring on whether to close Monroe to vehicles permanently. About 20 businesses operate in the district.

Detroit is studying whether to fill in the Jefferson-Chalmers canals, and residents took boats out to say no. Nearly every parcel in the east-side neighborhood sits in a federal flood hazard zone, and the city has $20 million for flood prevention. A consultant hired in late June is weighing options that include closing the canals running inland from the Detroit River; residents want seawalls repaired instead. "We're going to look at all the options, and one option could be closing canals, but it has to be a factual option," said Detroit Building Authority director Tyrone Clifton.
